Position Overview:
The Controls Manager is responsible for leading the plant controls engineering teams. They are tasked with defining corporate standards that ensure continuity across Gopher’s SCADA and DCS, while leveraging industry best practice for continuous improvement. This position acts as the control system subject matter expert, accountable for the programming, hardware, and software of various facility systems such as PLCs and HMI software. They will ensure that all work is in alignment with the Company’s commitment to safety and the environment with specific ownership of facility safe operating controls. This position reports directly to the Senior Director of Process Engineering.


Critical Success Criteria:

  • As the controls subject matter expert, develop and maintain engineering standards that drive efficiency and minimize risk for the plant teams.
  • Partner with key stakeholders to maintain a long-term control system strategy that leverages evolving and emerging technologies to anticipate future needs.
  • Addresses shortcomings in engineered controls documents, and implements a robust methodology that ensures documentation remain current.
  • Implement and maintain resourcing plans that maximize the team’s ability to manage day to day responsibilities as well as prioritize strategic initiatives.
  • Source, lead, manage and develop a team of skilled engineers and technical specialists, capable of supporting the organization’s routine operations and strategic objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee plant controls teams and guarantee alignment between facility OT (operational technology) and documentation activities.
  • Create and lead a team of capable Instrument and Control Technicians with responsibility to ensure process critical instruments are installed and maintained.
  • Develop and maintain a controls strategy that supports the plants and anticipates future needs including PLC hardware/software, HMI and SCADA.
  • Collaborate across the business to develop comprehensive controls standards and implement best practice solutions across Gopher’s OT systems.
  • Actively participates in organizational safety assessments, and ultimately responsible for control system safety improvements.
  • Implement standardization of Gopher’s instrumentation and calibration strategy for process critical devices.
  • Work directly with other Gopher engineering teams to support identified strategic objectives.
  • Implement tracking systems to routinely evaluate team capacity vs demand, and develop resourcing plans to achieve business needs.
  • Facilitate the organization’s stage gate project management system through active engagement with other engineering functions.
  • Create a high performance culture and team that ensures employees are prepared to meet current and future objectives.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field from an accredited College or University plus at least 5 years of industrial controls experience OR a 2-year Technical Degree from an accredited school plus at least 10 years of industrial controls experience.
  • At least 5 years of previous experience managing controls engineers in an industrial environment.
  • Programming capability in Wonderware or similar SCADA systems.
  • Programming capability in Studio/RSLogix 5000 Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLC programming software.
  • Experience with PLC networks (Ethernet/IP and ControlNet).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to foster a positive work environment and collaborate effectively with internal customers.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills - innovation, collaboration, analysis, inductive reasoning.
  • Self-starter, able to work well under pressure, handle multiple tasks concurrently, attend to details, and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a metal casting, foundry, or similar manufacturing operation strongly preferred, but not required.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD software preferred, but not required.
  • Experience testing, diagnosing, troubleshooting, and debugging software systems preferred, but not required.
  • Familiarity with controls safety systems (BMS, SIS, etc.) as well as related standards (IEC 61511, ISA 84) preferred, but not required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability and willingness to wear respiratory protection directly against skin with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability and willingness to move about the plant, including climbing a flight of stairs, with or without reasonable accommodation.
