Controller

The John Thomas Dye School, an independent K-6 school located in Los Angeles, is currently
seeking a full-time Controller. The John Thomas Dye School’s Mission Statement is as follows:

JOB SUMMARY: The Controller is responsible for the daily functions of the Business Office.
Duties include managing the monthly close process and ensuring timely financial reporting,
Student Billing, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable supervision, General Ledger
supervision, Treasury Management, File/Archive supervision, Audit & Tax preparation, Business
Office compliance support, Payroll support. The Controller is a strategic partner assisting the
DFO with the preparation of the financial statements, budget, projections, benchmark statistics,
financial/dashboard models, providing support during Board of Trustee Committees, and other
critical financial and operational needs of the School. The Controller supervises the Business
Office support staff positions and liaises with the Parents’ Association on financial related
business.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Monthly financial close process: complete this process each month in partnership with

the Accountant and support to the DFO by preparing journal entries and reclassed
adjustments and reconciliations

  • Manage the School’s Student Billing system
  • Record and reconcile revenue: Tuition and fees, auxiliary programs, Parents’ Association,
fundraising, and miscellaneous income
  • Balance sheet and expense reconciliations
  • Investment reconciliations and reporting
  • Supervise, code, and review Accounts Payable entries prepared by the Accountant.
  • Review bank deposits and batches prepared by the Accountant
  • Assist with treasury management: online banking, merchant
processing/reconciliations/reporting
  • Support the DFO with management reports and budget reconciliations
  • Support the semi-monthly payroll processing in partnership with the Business Office
team
  • Review and post journal entries and reconciliations prepared by the Accountant
  • Participate in quarterly committee meetings and prepare committee materials, reports

and minutes

  • Assist DFO with the annual budget, benchmarking reports, dashboard summary, and
financial statements
  • Manage and the annual financial audit, 990 and tax preparation, 403(b) audit,
coordinate audit field work, prepare lead and roll-forward schedules, and supporting
documents as requested by auditors and tax firm
  • Work with DFO on ongoing compliance and internal/external reporting
  • Manage digital and paper archives for the Business Office
  • Perform other tasks and special projects as assigned to support the Business Office and

the financial/operational functions of the School

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent relevant experience; 5+ years of senior
accounting experience required
  • CPA/MBA preferred
  • Independent School or Non-profit experience preferred
  • Ability to supervise employees and promote a positive team environment
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills to problem-solve and resolve issues and/or make
recommendations
  • Proficiency with technology and software required: Dual-entry accounting software,

Microsoft Windows, Apple OS, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and
Outlook), Internet Browsers (Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Chrome), Adobe Acrobat,
familiarity with cloud-based software solutions,

  • Ability to maintain and secure sensitive and confidential verbal, written, printed and
electronic information
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills and attention to detail and adherence to
deadlines
  • Effective, empathetic and considerate communication skills (verbal and written) for
in-person, telephone, and email correspondence to faculty, staff, vendors, parents,
guests, visitors, etc.

The salary range is determined by years of experience and education with a range from $95 to
$130,000.
