The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is accepting applications for a Connecticut Careers Trainee position with a target classification of Transportation Planner 1, in the Division of Facilities and Transit, AEC Applications Unit, which will be based in our Newington, CT Headquarters building. This position is in the Office of Engineering. We are looking for a self-motivated, collaborative CAD (Computer Aided Design) professional to join our team.

About the Role:
The AEC Applications section works to continually improve project delivery efficiency and effectiveness through support services by researching, developing, implementing, and managing digital computer-aided engineering and construction applications; including, but not limited to, project management solutions, infrastructure design solutions, digital workflows, GIS tools and electronic design standards.
In this role, you will be part of a team responsible for managing CAD Applications, using Bentley OpenRoads Designer, OpenBridge Designer and OpenBuildings Designer. You will provide assistance to both in house employees as well as outside consultants, develop training guides, standards and maintain the CTDOT CONNECT Edition CAD Workspace. You will also assist on the CAD to GIS initiative supporting highway, bridge, traffic and facilities transportation engineering projects.

Connecticut Career Trainees become eligible for promotion to the target classification of Transportation Planner 1, upon successful completion of the 1 or 2-year training program. Length of training program is determined by the incumbent’s education and the target class requirements.

  • Salary Note: During the first year of training, Connecticut Career Trainees with a Bachelor's degree earn $52,661 per year, and Connecticut Career Trainees with a Master's degree earn $54,557 per year. During the second year of training, the salary increases to $60,254 per year.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States, available to travel for training, conferences, meetings, field reviews, etc. both within and outside of normal working hours, when necessary, and must possess and retain a valid driver’s license.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a Bachelor's or Master's degree.

NOTE:

  • If the target job classification has a Substitution Allowed that requires the Bachelor's or Master's degree to be in a specific area(s), then these specific degree areas are required for appointment to the Connecticut Career Trainee classification.
  • Candidates cannot be appointed until all degree requirements are complete.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a Bachelor's or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in one of the following degree areas: Engineering, Math, Physics, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Educational experience (such as coursework, research, project, internship) in CAD, math, physics, GIS, highway engineering, surveys, or structural engineering
  • Experience providing verbal and written communication to multiple diverse populations
  • Experience with public speaking and presenting
  • Experience prioritizing work and meeting time sensitive deadlines
  • Experience identifying problems, researching solutions, making a decision, and verifying accuracy of decision
  • Experience using Microsoft Office 365 including Teams, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook
