Position Summary

The Compost Coordinator will oversee all composting performed by Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) and serve a key role in the continued growth and success of the compositing program.

Job Status: Full time

Department: Parks Operations- Horticulture

Salary Range: $45,000 - $55,000 annually

Location: 75 Battery Place, NYC 10280

Essential Duties: The Compost Coordinator will work closely and in collaboration with all team members of the department to ensure continued success, improvement and expansion of our compost programs. This includes but is not limited to:

Composting Operations

  • Ensure the effective collection, sorting, and processing of food waste from our community drop off sites and garden debris from the 36 acres of green space maintained by BPCA.
  • Update, implement and educate staff on compost and soil testing protocols using the BPCA Soil Lab reagent testing equipment and compound microscope to analyze physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil.
  • Maintain accurate data logs and records of compost weight, temperature, other information in an efficient manner.
  • Create and assist in the implementation of standards and protocols that innovate and streamline the composting processes. Work with the Assistant Director of Horticulture to ensure that implementation of these processes are followed consistently across the division through education and clear and constructive communication.
  • In collaboration with other departments in BPCA, educate members of community and staff on the importance of composting and foster additional participation.
  • Innovate to scale up composting operations by engaging the community and other partnerships to capture more waste streams to divert from landfill.

Horticulture Operations

  • Assist members of the Horticulture Division staff with soil management practices, including composting, compost tea brewing, and application.
  • Collaborate with Senior Horticulturists to ensure detailed and accurate records on applications of soil amendments are maintained.
  • Plant, prune, mow, weed, deadhead, and care for plants throughout BPC as assigned by the Assistant Director of Horticulture.
  • Safely operate all necessary equipment and maintain a clean work area.
  • Perform snow and ice removal, including the use of snow shovels, ice breakers, snow blowers, and salt spreaders on an emergency and non-emergency basis during weekdays and weekends.


Education and Experience:


  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field is preferred and/or a minimum of four (4) years of previous composting and horticulture experience is required. Should possess experience interacting with all levels of staff and public on compost education.
  • Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license
