DEFINITION:

Works as a member of a health promotion team to improve community or environmental health for a division of the Missoula City-County Health Department or Partnership Health Center.

REPRESENTATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Participates in planning, executing and evaluating community or environmental health education programs in specific areas as assigned. Exercises responsibility for simple programs and projects.

Conducts community health or environmental health needs assessments, and program evaluations.

Develops a logical scope and sequence plan for possible community or environmental health education programs.

Recruits support from community organizations, resources and potential participants for assistance in planning and program development.

Leads some community meetings to accomplish community or environmental health related objectives. Assists in providing training for support personnel as required.

Performs literature reviews related to community or environmental health. Gathers and compiles a variety of educational materials and information.

Facilitates and attends meetings; may make school visits and other public presentations. May coordinate the use of media communications.

Represents the division at a variety of functions.

Develops and uses printed materials effectively.

Performs general program administrative activities including report writing, bookkeeping and data collection.

Performs related work as required or directed.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of a division level manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May coordinate the work of volunteers or interns.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Has numerous contacts with a wide variety of outside agency representatives, members of the public and volunteers, to provide leadership in planning and coordinating efforts in a cooperative atmosphere.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE: Working knowledge of community or environmental health education theory, principles and practices. Considerable knowledge about health promotion, primary and secondary prevention. Considerable knowledge about project specific community or environmental health issues, ex: sexuality, including AIDS related issues; alcohol related concerns; water quality; environmental health; air quality. Working knowledge of learning theory and practices in community education. Working knowledge of client confidentiality, and the ethical and legal requirements of the profession. Working knowledge of the principles and practices of HIPAA compliance. Working knowledge of the PHC Corporate Compliance Guidelines.

SKILLS: Skill in the use of a personal computer using word-processing; desktop publishing; graphics and database software.

ABILITIES: Ability to conduct a public health or environmental health assessment or community diagnosis which may include surveillance, identifying needs, analyzing the causes of problems, collecting and interpreting data, monitoring and evaluation. Ability to conduct literature research. Ability to effectively organize, empower and facilitate groups. Ability to communicate effectively in the English language, orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals and groups, particularly when dealing with sensitive issues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

EDUCATION: Requires high school graduation or GED.

EXPERIENCE: Requires two (2) years of experience in developing and delivering community health programs.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires immunizations or proof of immunity to certain infectious diseases and a TB test. New employees will be asked to volunteer vaccination status for required vaccines upon hire and will be offered assistance during hiring to receive necessary immunizations. Employees who have not received the vaccines required for their positions or who are unwilling to voluntarily provide vaccination status for required vaccines will receive a reasonable accommodation where such accommodation does not require an undue hardship or endanger the health or safely of any person.

PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

Works primarily in an office type setting. Requires some evening and weekend work; the ability to travel for frequent in-town and occasional out-of-town events; requires occasional light lifting, up to 30 lbs (ex: audio visual equipment, written materials). The employee may risk exposure to communicable diseases.
