Summary:
The Community Health Educator for Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas (PPGT) is responsible for facilitating sexual health education programs for young people, parents, and other adults within assigned region. The Community Health Educator develops new community contacts and maintains existing programs, serving as an advocate and liaison for PPGT’s health education programs. Meets productivity expectations, follows organization policies, and ensures customer service and compliance standards are maintained. Abides by the organization’s mission in performing job duties, demonstrating an understanding of and commitment to quality healthcare and excellent customer service.

Essential Job Functions and Expectations:
  • Schedules and facilitates evidence-based or informed health education programs on a variety of human sexuality topics for diverse groups of youth and adults in a variety of settings including schools and other community sites. Ensures that all programs are age-appropriate, medically accurate, values neutral, inclusive of gender and sexual minority people, and trauma-informed. Topics may include but are not limited to: healthy relationships, sexual decision-making, contraception, sexual orientation, consent, puberty and adolescent development, sexually transmitted infections, and safer sex practices.
  • In conjunction with management, designs program content to meet the needs of the client when no appropriate curricula exist.
  • Evaluates and researches the program setting and tailors the presentation content based on the audience or environment.
  • Builds and maintains positive, professional working relationships with community partners for service delivery. Builds effective and trustworthy relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Identifies and recommends potential community partners to expand education services and programming.
  • Maintains current electronic and paper records and meets the requirements necessary to fulfill funding and/ or evaluation requirements. May assist in preparing department reports.
  • Serves as a resource in the community for evidence-based sexual health information.
  • Works closely with Community Health Education Manager and other team members to ensure coordinated service delivery.
  • Participates in supervision meetings, staff meetings, and all other required meetings or trainings.
  • Represents the organization at meetings and community events, as appropriate.
  • May be responsible for leading and coordinating all aspects of peer education programs including: publicity/marketing, auditions, training, skit writing, rehearsals, performances, ongoing communication, parental consent, transport, scheduling, and securing venues.
  • May respond and interact with the public/patients text and online chat questions per Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) guidelines and PPGT protocols.
  • Has restricted access to patient private health information and has no reason to view protected health information (PHI). May have access to data that is not considered PHI, such as aggregate numbers.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Associates degree with a minimum of 4 years of related experience.

Minimum Experience:
  • Related experience - experience in health/social services field.
  • Must have experience as educator/trainer and in public speaking.
  • Experience in providing curriculum-based sexual health education to groups of youth and parents desired.

Required Licenses or Certifications:
  • Certification as a Sexuality Educator or as a Certified Health Education Specialist preferred.

Agency Standards:
  • Must have excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet.
  • Must have the willingness and ability to adapt to change, including advances or new technology.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills and be committed to providing the highest level of customer satisfaction.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Fluency in Spanish/English required (if a job requirement it is documented in your employee records and periodic assessments of fluency will be performed).
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to travel as required.
  • Must be willing to work in-office, deliver in-person education services; at times permitted to work remotely or deliver virtual education
  • Comfortable and knowledgeable with discussing topics relating to sexual and reproductive health.
  • Must be able to speak and communicate effectively in public and display excellent facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrates cultural and linguistic competence by using multiple educational and training styles effective for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, sound judgment, and problem-solving techniques in the decision-making process.
  • Ability to effectively use organization’s computer systems.
  • Requires an understanding of and commitment to quality healthcare and excellent customer service.
