Each year over 11,000 young people from all five New York City boroughs come to The Door for primary health care, reproductive care and health education, mental health counseling, legal services, supportive housing, HSE, ESL, tutoring and homework help, college preparation and computer classes, career & education services, job placement, daily meals, cultural arts and services.

Position Overview: The Community Engagement Educator engages adolescents and community members through workshops and presentations on health care, including contraceptives, STIs, pregnancy options, HIV, and other topics related to sexual health. This outreach position involves working closely with the Adolescent Health Center’s Peer Educators.

Responsibilities:

  • Represents The Door and its philosophy to outside agencies (CBOs and FBOs), NYC DOE schools, and to other health facilities.
  • Maintains appropriate logs, routing slips, reports, and other administrative documents and tasks.
  • Responsible, in community-based assignments, for facilitating both small and large group presentations on topics related to sexual health and other health topics.
  • Develop and carryout creative ways to reach communities identified by the NYC DOH as high risk for HIV and teen pregnancy with the goal of educating community members about sexual health topics and referring young people to The Door.
  • Provide tours and AHC orientation to outside visitors, including groups of young people and professionals from schools and CBOs.
  • Facilitates, in conjunction with a NYC DOE certified teacher, health education workshops with emphasis on sexual health topics in DOE schools.
  • Develops curricula, lesson plans, and evaluation mechanisms for both outreaches and in-reaches.
  • Facilitates large and small discussion groups and other activities on topics related to sexual health in Center Space and throughout The Door.
  • Receives training in appropriate CDC funded interventions and delivers the interventions on an ongoing basis.
  • Assists in the coordination and facilitation of Door-wide events including but not limited to Fall Kickoff, Community Meetings, and Pride/Prom.
  • Assists the Community Engagement Manager with the development and coordination of the AHC’s peer education programs and tailored messaging for social media engagement deliverables.
  • Attends professional development trainings and workshops.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • BA in related field preferred, High School diploma or HSE required
  • Demonstrated experience in group facilitation
  • Strong knowledge of topics related to sexual health
  • Knowledge of youth issues and/or familiarity with youth population
  • Commitment to professionalism and ability to serve as a model representative of The Door
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required
  • Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred

Work Schedule: Fulltime, Monday - Friday, 35 hours a week, with some evening hours

Salary: Commensurate with experience, plus a generous benefits package
