Custom Job Purpose:

This position exists to perform skilled work in installation, repair and maintenance of a variety of Fire Alarm and Communications Systems.


Essential Functions of this Job

Plans layout, installs and/or repairs wiring, conduit apparatus and control equipment for Fire Alarm and Communications Systems. Plans new or modifies current installations to minimize waste of materials, provides access for future maintenance consistent with specifications and local electrical and fire alarm codes, avoids unsightly, hazardous, unreliable installation. Tests continuity of circuits to insure electrical compatibility and safety of all components using standard testing instruments. Observes functioning of installed equipment or systems to detect hazards and needs for adjustment, relocation or replacement. Installs fire alarm devices as required by direction of Fire Marshals. Plans and implements improvements to fire alarms to bring systems up to current codes and specifications. Installs conduit, wiring and devices as needed for intercom, and fire alarm systems. Installs lightning and surge protection equipment for both intercom and fire alarm systems. Troubleshoots and corrects defects in field equipment and wiring. Uses and maintains tools and equipment.

Must be able to perform physical tasks as set forth in the Physical Environment section of this document.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Two (2) years experience in electrical repair work under a licensed electrician or fire alarm contractor is preferred. Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, method, tools and materials of the electrical and fire alarm trade. Knowledge of local and national electrical and fire alarm codes. Knowledge of the hazards of the trade and of appropriate precautionary measures. Ability to locate and repair defects in electrical and fire alarm systems and equipment. Ability to make accurate estimates of time and materials. Ability to work from electrical diagrams and blueprints and to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions. Skill in the use of tools and materials of the electrical, intercom, sound system and fire alarm trade. Ability to keep daily records and logs. Bilingual/biliterate preferred.


Education, Experience and/or Certification/License Requirements

Graduation from high school, completion of GED, or trade school. Must have, or be able to acquire within six (6) months of attaining position, an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) fire alarm certification. A National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) or similar certification shall serve as a property substitute. Must have a valid driver's license appropriate to the vehicles assigned to the trade, and be qualified to drive a School Board vehicle.


Work Context:

Requires standing, walking and moving about to coordinate work. Requires face-to-face discussions and contact with individuals and/or teams. Requires coordination of work tasks to establish priorities, set goals and meet deadlines. Requires work with both internal and external contacts, and with the public. Requires the use of alternative communication systems such as electronic mail, telephones, two way radios and computers.


Physical Environment:

Requires standing for the majority of the day, and the ability to frequently lift, carry, move and/or position objects weighing up to 50 pounds. May infrequently be required to lift more than 50 pounds with assistance as needed. Requires working both indoors and outdoors. Requires the proper use of personal protective devices and equipment as assigned.
