The Deep South Center for Environmental Justice (DSCEJ) is now hiring an experienced Communications Coordinator. This position will also serve our partner organization, the National Black Environmental Justice Network (NBEJN).

The Deep South Center for Environmental Justice (DSCEJ) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and families harmed by pollution and vulnerable to climate change in the Gulf Coast Region through research, education, community and student engagement for policy change, as well as health and safety training for environmental careers. DSCEJ directs projects involving universities and community-based organizations in seven states.

The National Black Environmental Justice Network (NBEJN) builds the power and capacity of frontline organizations, experts, and professional leaders in environmental justice, to lead powerful, transformative, and dynamic social change. With our community-based partner groups, we bridge the grassroots and the national, supporting outsider strategies to disrupt the status quo while also building pathways to influence the insider conversation. Our vision of a better world centers the leadership of impacted Black people, communities, and organizations to move our work on environmental justice forward.

Position Summary:

Reporting to and in partnership with the Director of Communications, theCommunications Coordinator will support a variety of communications functions including but not limited to website management, social media management, event planning and general communications tasks. They will have an integral role in executing DSCEJ’s and NBEJN’s communications and community engagement strategy through a variety of methods, including public relations, advertising and digital marketing. The position provides an excellent opportunity to gain significant experience with nonprofit communications in a fast-paced, team environment.

Duties & Responsibilities:

GENERAL

  • Assist in the execution of communications strategies;
  • Assist in the creation and editing of communications copy (e.g. press releases, publications, social media posts);
  • Track projects and media exposure;
  • Assist with keeping contact databases and media lists up-to-date;
  • Assist in segmenting contacts as needed for various communications efforts;
  • Assist in maintaining communications calendars, schedules and appointments;
  • Assist in researching, writing and editing content for distribution on various platforms, including photos and videos;
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of a library of profiles, success stories and news clips that help demonstrate the value of our organizations;
  • Perform administrative duties such as answering calls, preparing presentations, scheduling meetings, making travel arrangements, etc.;
  • Assist with the production and updating of organizational creative collateral, including branded materials, brochures, promotional items, stationery, etc.;
  • Assist in drafting proposals and funder reports;
  • Assist with organizing and executing events;
  • Offer administrative support to projects and in-house teams;
  • Perform other support duties as requested.

DIGITAL MEDIA

  • Assist in the creation and implementation of social media strategies;
  • Draft and edit social media posts, blogs, presentations, emails, website copy and other materials;
  • Use analytics tools to gauge the success of campaigns;
  • Research industry innovations and tools;
  • Update posts to include relevant keywords for search engine optimization;
  • Communicate with followers, respond to queries in a timely manner and monitor customer reviews;
  • Use analytics for continuous improvement of communications;
  • Work with relevant teams to keep website content fresh;
  • Help to maintain web content via content management system;
  • Monitor SEO and web traffic metrics.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • BS/BA in Marketing, Communications or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience
  • Previous work experience as a Communications Assistant, Communications specialist or similar role.
  • Knowledge of media relations and digital media strategies.
  • Working knowledge of design software (e.g., Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and content management systems are required.
  • Proven proficiency in using various social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn
  • Knowledge of Google Workspace and Microsoft Office
  • Working knowledge of communications platforms such as Constant Contact, MailChimp, etc.
  • Willingness to stay up-to-date with current technologies and trends in social media, design tools and applications
  • Proven skills in marketing communications, web content management, social media marketing or public relations
  • Outstanding communication (oral and written) skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to access and navigate the office.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at a time.
  • Occasional travel required

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary range: $60-70K (negotiable with commensurate qualifications and experience)
