The Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) is a global Coalition of more than 150 organizations dedicated to advancing the forest, land, and resource rights of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, Afro-descendant Peoples, and in particular the women within these groups. Members capitalize on each other’s strengths, expertise, and geographic reach to achieve solutions more effectively and efficiently. RRI leverages the power of its global Coalition to amplify the voices of local peoples and proactively engage governments, multilateral institutions, and private sector actors to adopt institutional and market reforms that support the realization of rights.

Communications Associate

The Communications Associate is responsible for working with RRI’s regional and global teams to advance the coalition’s advocacy efforts on digital platforms. The Associate will contribute to various deliverables for the communications program, including production and promotion of RRI’s publications, eblasts, blog posts, and social media content. The Associate will also lead the management of RRI’s website and support the team in writing, packaging, and distributing impact stories for international audiences, including community leaders, policymakers, donors, and global private sector.

The ideal applicant has experience communicating through a variety of digital platforms, including social media and knowledge/media-sharing platforms. This includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube. We are looking for a detail-oriented writer and creative storyteller, adept at turning visions into exciting and effective communications products.

This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC or Montreal, Quebec, Canada and reports to the Senior Manager, Strategic Communications. Our Communications team has four full-time members and works with an array of consultants across the world to support content production in various languages to serve our multicultural coalition.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Support the design, management, and sharing of RRI’s digital communications content

  • Ensure editorial control and consistency in content across RRI’s website and its partner websites.
  • Coordinate with web developers and designers to improve RRI website’s design and functionality.
  • Support creation and sharing of powerful social media content for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
  • In coordination with consultants, lead design and distribution of RRI’s digital products: blog posts, eblasts, social media, and online publications.
  • Develop systems to track and maximize distribution of digital content.

2. Provide communications support for RRI’s programmatic work

  • Assist RRI’s researchers in synthesizing complex technical products into digestible formats.
  • Assist regional programs in Asia, Africa and Latin America in sharing their programs’ impact stories with digital audiences.
  • Arm RRI spokespeople at global and regional events with updated messaging and data in compelling and accessible formats.

3. Share information and build creative partnerships with coalition members and allies

  • Manage and strengthen a network of communications focal points across the coalition and promote digital information sharing.
  • Represent RRI communications in external communications networks as needed.
  • Maintain and drive content partnerships with coalition members for increased impact.
  • Support internal information management and sharing across program teams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, design, digital storytelling or a relevant field required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in the field of communications.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English.
  • Professional fluency in Spanish a plus but not required.
  • Strong respect for all cultures and a firm commitment to social justice and human rights.
  • Experience creating communications content for social media.
  • Working knowledge of website content management systems and design software.
  • Organized and detail-oriented with ability to multi-task and prioritize competing demands.
  • Comfortable liaising with a diverse set of consultants and collaborators from across the world

Salary: Starting at 55,000 USD, based on experience
