Episcopal School of Jacksonville seeks a full-time College Counselor/Assistant Director of College Counseling to guide students and their families through the college admissions process, working with a caseload of approximately 35 to 45 students.


Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred
  • Prior college counseling experience in an independent school or college admissions experience, three years or more is preferred
  • Demonstrated and comprehensive knowledge of the college search and admissions process, predominantly of U.S. colleges and universities.
  • An ability and desire to embrace continued growth as part of a collaborative team and contribute to an engaging and inclusive learning environment and workplace
  • Passion for building positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues, as well as an eagerness for secondary and postsecondary education
  • Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) and represent the school at internal and external events
  • Timely responsiveness to constituents, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines under pressure and time constraints
  • Familiarity with data systems such as SCOIR, Kickstart, and Veracross is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of the financial aid application process is highly desirable
  • History of continued education or professional development
  • Ability to be flexible, effectively manage stress, and adapt to changing work priorities and assignments

Responsibilities

Advising and supporting students in all aspects of the college search and admissions process, including

  • Serve as a collaborative member of a five-person college counseling office (four college counselors and one administrative assistant) to support a senior class of approximately 150 students. Report to the Director of College Counseling.
  • Advise students and families, through regular individual and group meetings, in the entire college search and application process – to include course selection, extracurricular planning, well-balanced college list development, summer planning, etc.
  • Actively contribute to the presentations and programs of the Episcopal College Counseling office, including some evening and weekend events.
  • Write personal, comprehensive letters of recommendation for students that demonstrate deep knowledge of the student and their academic and extra-curricular involvement. Offer guidance to faculty members regarding their written recommendations.
  • Co-lead college preparatory seminars and classes for grades 9, 10, and 11.
  • Maintain and guide students and families on the use of SCOIR or a similar college guidance program.
  • Participate in the life of the school during and after school hours, including weekly in-school chapel services
  • Commit to professional growth and development through membership and engagement in professional associations, including NACAC, SACAC, and ACCIS.
  • Establish new and maintain ongoing relationships with college admission officers.
  • Visit colleges and universities during the school year and summer, and host college admission representatives on the ESJ campus, to expand knowledge of postsecondary options and processes.
  • Serve as an academic advisor to a small group of 6-8 students, from their 9th-grade year to graduation.
