Scope of Position

Broaden and extend Corning Inc.’s competency and leadership of Anti-reflective coating systems by selecting partners to co-design, develop, and implement Anti-Reflective coating systems for a variety of applications for Auto Glass Solutions (AGS) division. The individual will work closely with the coating internal technical teams and external equipment suppliers to develop and to improve coating equipment process capabilities for auto interior and exterior products and then transfer these capabilities to manufacturing operations. The individual will provide specifications and recommendations to equipment suppliers to improve overall coating attributes, increase line speeds and drive cost reduction opportunities. This position will be responsible for providing equipment and process support during coating technology introductions / startups and qualifications and continual improvements. The individual is also expected to have excellent project management skills and broad technical skills and experience. The role requires strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work with people of diverse cultural and technical background in worldwide locations of Corning Incorporated. In addition, to ensure and complete Job Safety Analyses for new equipment introductions.


Role and Responsibilities

  • With Development, Engineering, and Equipment suppliers, to define and select world class coating platforms and systems. Use proven commercial approaches, develop cost effective technology options where necessary
  • Co-design, build, integrate and start-up coating systems at new/existing glass finishing facilities
  • Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise in coating process and equipment design
  • Convert product goals and performance requirements into new coating process systems
  • Be responsible for identification of project resources and budgets necessary to complete the project tasks and coordinate the project team’s efforts towards successfully achieving overall project objectives
  • Support technology assessments of coating systems / concepts based on fundamental science and apply the fundamentals and engineering principles to minimize defects, reduce cycle time and cost
  • Supervise testing, equipment builds and FAT at vendor facility
  • Support site preparation, installation, SAT, start-up, and early production coverage
  • Collaborate with R&D groups in advancing fundamental understanding & evaluating new coating processes and/or product ideas.
  • Engage in the manufacturing process development work including experiment planning, data analysis & reporting results.
  • Identify low-cost manufacturing opportunities that maintain the specified quality level
  • Implement inline process characterization tools and process monitoring and control systems for PVD process control and data acquisition. Define and acquire offline metrology to validate thin film quality

Education and Experience

  • M.S. or PhD in Technical Discipline required (Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical Engineering, or Applied Science)
  • Bachelor''s Degree would be accepted with adequate, relevant experience
  • 5+ years in a technical field to include:

o Experience with deposition of metal/metal oxide thin films on glass or similar surfaces

o Technology or Product Transfer

  • Proven technical expertise in the field of Thin Film Physical Vapor Disposition (PVD, PE, CVD, etc) equipment and processes
  • High level of fundamental understanding of thin films coating process and materials to enable the development of cost-effective products and coating machine systems.
  • Knowledge of process control/analysis techniques, including DOE, SPC, Six Sigma, etc.

Travel Requirements

  • Estimate travel up to 35% depending upon specific project assignment. Travel may be required during installation, debug, and start-up as well as for routine interaction with Customers and Suppliers. This would be a combination of domestic and international travel. International travel would most commonly be to Asia or Europe.
