QUALIFICATIONS:
Licensing/Certification: Must meet state and federal certification.

Education: Completion of the state-approved training programs, including on-the-job training.

Experience: Some health care experience preferred.

SPECIAL DEMANDS:
You must have a genuine interest in working with geriatrics residents. Have a willingness to perform routine, repetitive tasks on a continuous basis, and perform tasks despite frequent interruptions. You must have the ability to perform tasks with consideration for residents in your work area. Must have a good bedside manner. Standing and walking will be constant during tours of duty. CNAs must be able to life, turn, and position residents along with assistive devices. CNAs must be willing to assist residents in all activities of daily living, including dressing, toileting and showering. CNAs must be able to withstand odors related to resident care and will likely come in contact with bodily fluids. CNAs need hand dexterity to handle delicate equipment. Visual and hearing acuity needed to detect changes in resident’s condition. CNAs may be exposed to communicable diseases and may incur cuts or minor burns from equipment.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:
Must be able to read, write and understand medical and nursing terminology. CNAs must have knowledge of procedures and techniques used in providing personal services for residents and in caring for equipment and supplies. CNAS must have a good understanding of sterilizing techniques in order to avoid infection of residents and self or contamination of equipment and supplies. CNAs must be aware of the assessment process and the development and execution of care plans.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Work under the direction of nurses.

2. Ambulate and transfer residents utilizing appropriate assistive devices and body mechanics.

3. Routinely turn and position residents.

4. Make beds every day, changing linens per facility policy and as needed.

5. Measure and record residents’ heights and weights.

6. Take temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure as directed by the nurse.

7. Care for incontinent residents.

8. Measure and record residents’ intake and output.

9. Collect sputum, urine and stool specimens.

10. Assist residents in all activities of daily living.

11. Pass out trays and feed/assist residents as needed.

12. Observe and document food, nourishment and food intake of each resident.

13. Keep resident bedsides clean at all times and personal belongings in orderly arrangement.

14. Assist with development and review of the resident care plans in conjunction with nursing and other disciplines.

15. Ensure resident privacy, respect and dignity.

16. Assist in orientation of new nursing assistants.

17. Participate in in-service programs.

18. Exhibit and perform proper hand washing techniques.

19. Maintain proper infection control procedure when handling clothing and linens.

20. Detect, correct and report to the charge nurse any unsafe condition that may result in bodily injury of fire.

21. Receive oral reports and written assignments from charge nurse at beginning of each tour of duty.

22. Provide maximum resident-care services to assure well being of resident to greatest degree.

23. Execute duties and responsibilities in conformance with established routine.

24. Assist with execution of resident assessment and plan of care.

25. Assure physical comfort, safety, and mental well being of residents.

26. Assist in daily requirements and tasks in care and treatment of residents such as toileting, grooming, bathing, feeding, dressing, observing intake of food, care of hair and nails, moving residents from area to area, responding to call, etc.

27. Detect and correct situations that have a probability of causing accidents or injuries to residents.

28. Observe and report symptoms, reactions and changes of residents.

29. Possess knowledge of procedures and techniques.

30. Understand standard techniques in personal service-care of residents.

31. Be aware of sterilizing procedures and avoid contamination.

32. Immediately answer the nurse’s call buzzer of each resident.

33. Encourage and motivate residents to participate in recreational, occupational, and physical therapies and other rehabilitative measures to promote activity of mind and body.

34. Foster self-respect and esteem by recognizing, accepting and respecting those entrusted to his/her care.

35. Clean used equipment and return to proper place after using, such as was basin bedpans, urinal enema cans, colon tubes and any other equipment that may be used.

36. Record bowel movements and kidney output of assigned residents as directed by charge nurse.

37. Check residents frequently and before going off duty to be sure that they are clean and dry.

38. Exhibit genuine interest in residents.

39. Exhibit patience and tact in dealing with residents, families and visitors.

40. Display initiative and judgment in recognizing symptoms indicative of resident’s adverse reactions to treatments.

41. Participate in safety drills.
