PAH is a holistic short-term residential treatment program (STRTP) for adolescents and non-minor dependents who require specialized mental health services in order to live safely and successfully at a lower level of care. We serve females, including transgender, gender expansive, and LGBTQ+ youth and non-minor dependents, ages 12 through 18, who are in out of home placements through the Child Welfare or Juvenile Justice systems. Our youth are living with a range of complex behavioral health needs, including those related to complex trauma and/or adverse childhood experiences, identity formation issues, depression, anxiety, and self-concept and family issues that inhibit well-being and healthy relationships. We strive to create an interactive and enriching environment that addresses the developmental, physical, emotional, social, mental health and spiritual needs of each youth served by teaching basic life and independent living skills, promoting safety and stability, and preparing for transition to adulthood.

Position Summary:

The Clinician provides mental health services to youth ages 12-18 years old placed at the STRTP. The Clinician is part of a multidisciplinary team that partners with youth to ensure that they are receiving the services they need to reach their goals. The Clinician collaborates with the youth, their family, Child Welfare, and other members of their team in order to support the youth successfully transition to a lower level of care, including a home or community setting. The Clinician will provide individual and group services utilizing evidence-based, evidence-informed, and promising best practices for the youth served. The Clinician takes a strengths-based, trauma-informed, culturally relevant, and client-centered approach to working with youth. The Clinician may be required to provide services on the evenings and weekends.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in intake and discharge processes
  • Completes a strengths-based, biopsychosocial mental health assessment and Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths Assessment (CANS) for youth admitted to the STRTP
  • Partners with youth to complete a mental health treatment plan that includes the youth’s goals and preferences for services and mental health services appropriate to meet the needs of the youth
  • Meet with youth at least weekly to work on identified goals
  • Completes monthly treatment plan reviews
  • Participates in Child and Family Team meetings
  • Partner with youth in promoting the involvement of family and other informal and formal supports.
  • Partner with youth in maintaining relationships with permanent support people and identifying opportunities to strengthen these relationships
  • Provide collateral services to youth’s significant support people
  • Provide group therapy and rehabilitation services within the STRTP milieu
  • Partner with youth in identifying community resources
  • Coordinate and partner with other STRTP staff to achieve treatment and independent living goals
  • Partner with youth in identifying obstacles to meeting educational, vocational, social, and independent living goals. Develop strategies to overcome these barriers.
  • Completes documentation in line with all applicable agency, county, state, and regulatory requirements and timelines
  • Complete transition determination plans and partner with youth in acquiring access to resources including, but not limited to health care, employment, housing, social security benefits, etc. as needed
  • Participates in regular team meetings
  • Provides evidence-based specialty mental health services, including individual and group therapy, directly to youth placed at the STRTP
  • Facilitates clinical trainings to STRTP employees and provides clinical consultation to the team as needed
  • Facilitates family therapy and skills, including strengthening parenting skills, as needed.
  • Participates in crisis services and emergency intervention protocols as needed
  • Serves as a community liaison with county workers, medical providers, and legal representatives.
  • Develops interagency and community network relationships which improve access to relevant community services and benefits.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement processes
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure the safety and well-being of each youth.

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Counseling from an accredited university or college
  • Registered with California BBS
  • At least one year’s experience providing services to adolescents, preferably current and/or former foster youth and/or youth involved in the juvenile justice system and their families
  • California Department of Justice and FBI fingerprint clearance.
  • Must have a dependable personal vehicle, valid California driver’s license, and proof of insurance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge clinical principles, models, and techniques for serving impoverished, and violence-impacted communities
  • Experience delivering individual, family, or group counseling.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of clients and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Commitment to working in a diverse workplace, and self-awareness regarding issues of race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion/spirituality and disability.
  • Cultural competence skills for working with African American, Latino, LGBTQ+, and disenfranchised populations is necessary
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders, families, schools, juvenile justice and child welfare systems personnel, partner agencies, and community members.
  • Experience with Medi-Cal billing process and procedures preferred
  • Ability to partner with youth to implement person-centered, needs-driven, strengths-based, and culturally relevant services
  • Ability to challenge the status quo and identify areas for improvement
  • Commitment to effectiveness, and ability to prioritize and follow-through.
  • Commitment to self-reflection and personal awareness as a means of being able to remain emotionally available and connected with youth function as an engaged team-member
  • Ability to view families, including biological, resource, and chosen families, as resources and support systems for youth, and commitment to involve families in services
