Position Objective
To provide service in all areas of zoo animal medicine and to assist in maintaining the best possible health care of the Society's animal collections through the use of modern methods of diagnosis and treatment.

Principal Responsibilities:
Assist in the health care of the animal collections at the Bronx Zoo, the City Zoos, and the New York Aquarium under the supervision of staff veterinarians.
Assist in carrying out the preventive medicine program under the supervision of staff veterinarians.
Diagnose and treat clinical medicine and surgery cases under the supervision of staff veterinarians.
Perform necropsy exams under the supervision of staff veterinarians.
Perform night treatments and hand-rearing of infant animals as needed.
Instruct veterinary student preceptors
Prepare and present scientific presentations to peers
Prepare and submit for publication in a peer reviewed journal at least one scientific paper
Be on call for emergencies, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
Take part in educational and training opportunities as appropriate.
To cooperate with and aid other WCS employees in their job functions as appropriate
Perform any and all duties appropriate to a veterinarian of the WCS

Qualification Requirements

EDUCATION/Special Requirements: Current New York State license to practice veterinary medicine. USDA accreditation, New York State Driver's License
EXPERIENCE: Minimum one-year full time veterinary experience
SKILLS/CHARACTERISTICS: Must be able to work effectively in a complex, multi- veterinarian, multi-technician health care setting; be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English; able to work flexible schedule
