Job description
firsthand is changing the way individuals living with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) get care. We are focusing on delivering real outcomes for a cohort that has historically been underserved, stigmatized, and deprioritized. By building a service focused on whole-person care, firsthand aims to find, establish a trusting relationship with, and support quality care for individuals living with complex experiences of SMI. firsthand’s high-touch model will dramatically improve the health and outcomes of its engaged individuals, driving down the utilization of high-cost care while also helping individuals enroll in eligible federal, state, and municipal benefits. Most importantly, our goal is to be the trusted guide, partner, and first call for individuals we serve, guiding them to a life of stability and independence.

In doing so, we will not only improve lives, but also improve the economics for managed care plans and states responsible for providing care to this community. This enables us to build solutions that scale and, as a result, change the way our society supports those most impacted by serious mental illness.

We are building a team of deeply passionate problem-solvers who are courageous enough to take on one of the country’s most challenging healthcare problems. Those who are up for the task will be rewarded with deeply mission-oriented workdays, mentorship from a similarly motivated team, and a voice at the table in the earliest stages of business building.

The Manager, Clinical Documentation will be a key member of firsthand’s appropriate clinical documentation operations team. We are looking for a scrappy, detail- and the data-obsessed individual who will lead scalable implementation, optimization, and accuracy of our clinical documentation program. The Principal will enable the best care possible for our individuals by empowering: our care teams to plan appropriate care, our support teams to identify potential population health interventions, and more. This is a full-time, salaried, and virtual position.

As a Manager, Clinical Documentation, you will:

    • Track performance of Medicare and Medicaid risk adjustment programs; coordinate market initiatives, plan operational programs, and identify strategic vendor opportunities to support
    • Oversee production of clear and concise summaries of analytical findings for easy consumption by clinical and market-based team leadership
    • Partner at-the-elbow with Support and Community leadership to help operationalize regional risk adjustment initiatives, e.g., focused clinical documentation improvement for providers newer to value-based payment programs
    • Leverage knowledge of risk-based payment models to independently drive analytics and present impact analyses to clinical, operational and business leadership
    • Educate stakeholders of various knowledge levels on why appropriate clinical documentation is important for the individuals firsthand serves

You will be a good fit if you have:

    • 5-7 years of experience at a healthcare services business; bonus if within a high-growth environment (e.g., incubator or new business vertical at a public company; venture-backed startup, etc)
    • At least 1-3 years of experience focused on risk adjustment and population health

The experience you bring to this role includes:

    • Self-starter with a high degree of drive, initiative, and follow through; comfortable and motivated to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment with a passion for problem solving
    • Demonstrated mastery of the Medicare HCC model; bonus but not necessary: familiarity with Medicaid risk models, such as CDPS or ACG
    • Proficiency in tracking down, leveraging, and reviewing high volumes of data, translating into insights and action plans, and partnering with Clinical and Operational leadership at-the-elbow to drive improvement
    • Exceptional interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; proven ability to collaborate across multiple teams and engage in multiple perspectives to work toward a common goal
Benefits

Our compensation package includes base, equity and a bonus potential. Our benefits include physical and mental health, dental, vision, 401(k) with a match, 16 weeks parental leave for either parent, flexible vacation, and a supportive culture.
