Position Overview:

The CCO will be the primary compliance and oversight professional to help us develop and manage the compliance function at Masterworks, including compliance matters with respect to SEC regulated activities in coordination with our regulated partner firms. The Compliance team currently consists of (2) compliance marketing analysts to review marketing copy used to attract investors to the Masterworks platform.

Masterworks is not currently a registered investment adviser or broker-dealer, but it has dedicated investment advisor representatives that are supervised by a third party registered investment adviser and broker-dealer. Responsibilities:

  • People management (hiring and mentoring) of a small compliance team. Organizing daily meetings to go through priorities and tasks with each team member.
  • Formation of a multi-state RIA. Historically, Masterworks has partnered with a third party RIA in order to conduct phone calls with potential investors related to investing in art. The firm is considering bringing this in-house over time.
  • Advertising and marketing compliance. Millions of dollars are spent each month on online advertising in order to drive investors to the Masterworks website. All advertising must be reviewed and approved by the compliance team.
  • Suitability, KYC, and AML. All financial advisors walk investors through suitability before making recommendations around how to invest in art. This is an evolving framework that should be owned by the compliance team.
  • Compliance audits, reviews, and information requests by the SEC and individual states.

Requirements and Skill Sets:

  • 8+ years compliance experience, including working in-house at a registered investment advisor, with at least 3 years in a lead compliance role
  • Experience working for an online investing platform or an asset manager
  • Experience managing SEC compliance reviews, inquiries and audits
  • Experience with ‘40 Act fund (or exempt fund) compliance is preferred
  • A business-minded professional, who is capable of balancing compliance risk with business opportunities.
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable SEC and state rules and regulations
  • Attention to detail, analytical, practical commercial orientation, excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Relevant securities licenses

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be eligible to work in the US - no exceptions.
  • Must be able to work out of our NYC office

Benefits at Masterworks:

  • Daily catered lunches
  • Free admission to art museums and galleries
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage with FSA options
  • PTO and 401k
  • Discounted Equinox membership
  • Happy hours, company outings, social clubs, and more!

How does Masterworks think about compensation?

The compensation range for the role is $180-300k (inclusive only of base salary, and exclusive of other potential competitive benefits such as on-target commission, bonus payments, and equity). Our ranges are very broad to accommodate all types of candidates and encourage growth. Specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on factors such as education, experience, qualifications, and alignment with market data. Exceptional candidates may receive salaries outside of the posted ranges.
