Temporary part-time certified Police Officer


Position Summary:
Temporary part-time certified Police Officer. WSCC Morristown Campus is the primary work location.

Officer will work as availability and needs of the campus or institution will allow and according to the needs of the college. Temporary part-time officers are placed on calendar rotation according to availability supplied by the 1st of each month for the following pay period. Work may include but is not limited to special events and full shifts when the full time officer is absent. Officers are placed on a holiday rotation for scheduling if and when needed. May also be asked to work alternate campus locations as needed depending on needs of the department and institution.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

A. Routine vehicle and foot patrol

B. Answer and log calls for service on a daily basis

C. Protect life and property on college controlled property.

D. According to department protocol, receive and document criminal and non-criminal reports and information, conduct preliminary investigations, build case files, and prepare reports to present to the full time officer in charge for follow up and investigation completion.

E. Must be able to apply training to safely restrain and take into custody those who violate the law.

F. Enforce state laws and college regulations.

G. Conduct regular safety equipment, facility, fire safety, emergency radio, AED and safety phone checks as necessary.

H. Provide planning and coverage for events held on primary campus or alternate campuses as needed.

I. Planning and set up of parking areas for events as needed.

J. Monitor parking and provide traffic flow/direction services for the duration needed

K. Enforcement of campus traffic and parking regulations.

L. Patrol parking lots and buildings providing security for vehicles parked on campus as building security for the occupants.

M. Prepare and complete departmental and institutional reports and documentation, as circumstances require.

N. Maintain an effective mode of communication at all times with the campus Sergeant, administrative staff of the assigned campus, local law enforcement and emergency services as well as the Chief of Campus Police.

O. Unlock and secure buildings/rooms as necessary.

P. Maintain a high level of productivity in all routine and special departmental assignments.

Q. Be flexible in scheduling and work location to meet the needs of the department and institution as needed.

R. Perform other duties as needed or assigned.

Required qualifications:

A. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

B. Be a citizen of the United States.

C. Be a high school graduate with a high school diploma or equivalent from a standard high school

D. Not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to or entered a pleas of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances.

E. Not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States.

F. Have his/her fingerprints on file with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

G. Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician.

H. Have a good moral character as determined by a thorough investigation conducted by the employing agency.

I. Be free of all apparent mental disorders as described in the Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association

J. Meet or exceed the requirements of the minimum standards law as stated per (TCA 38-8-106). Physical and psychological examinations and official background check are required prior to a job offer being made.

K. Responsibility for maintaining POST certification or certifiable status by attending POST required training and providing the campus police department with certificates of successful completion to be included in department training records.

Preferred Qualifications:

A.S. degree or higher in Criminal Justice or related field. At least three years of continuous employment with a law enforcement or similar agency.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

The below requirements are essential to the job function of a campus police officer. Physical requirements may be necessary on a prolonged basis. Campus Police officers are required to:

A. Sit, talk, hear, stand, walk/run

B. Use hands to finger movement, handle/control or feel objects, tools and equipment.

C. Reach with hands and arms.

D. Climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl.

E. Taste and smell.

F. Occasionally lift and/or move up to, or more than, 100 pounds.

G. Specific vision abilities include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities and Work Characteristics:

A. Knowledge of campus policies, rules and regulations, and campus jurisdictional areas.

B. Knowledge of city, county and state laws and rules of the court.

C. Knowledge of effective methods of investigation, and police/security work.

D. Ability to react properly and to enforce laws, rules and regulations, and policies tactfully and with respect for the rights of others.

E. Ability to operate law-enforcement equipment to include but not limited to: vehicle, lights, siren, communication equipment, computer and various software applications and packages.

F. Ability to meet institutional and local area requirements related to arrest authority and weapons use.

G. Ability to follow department protocol and communicate respectfully and tactfully with administrative staff of the department and college, both verbally and in writing.

H. Ability to make split second decisions that may involve life and death situations.

I. Ability to take control of volatile situations and de-escalate such situations.

J. Ability to take and apply instruction and direction.

K. Ability to apply all training received to aspects of the job function.

L. Ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner with limited supervision.

M. Ability to meet deadlines and produce a high quantity of quality work.

N. Ability to be a professional in presence and communication.

O. Ability to comply with department protocols and to be flexible when needed.

P. Ability to take and apply constructive criticism and correction in a positive and productive manner.

Q. Ability to multi-task.

R. Ability to produce high quantity and quality of work under pressure

S. Ability to address small or large groups and to effectively testify in court as needed.

Work Hours:

As needed according to the needs of the department and institution with some flexibility depending on need of the department or institution. Full-time will be expected to work holiday rotation for the Morristown or other campus locations when temporary part time are not available to work. Full-time officer may be asked to modify shift and work an alternate location on an as needed basis depending on the needs of the department and institution.

Special Instructions:

Applicants must be certified as a police officer in the State of Tennessee and be in good standing with the POST commission. POST status will be checked prior to interview.
