The Catholic Diocese of Richmond is seeking a Campus Minister to serve the Catholic Campus Ministry at the College of William & Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia.


William & Mary is a public research university, with an undergraduate enrollment of 6,300 and post-graduate enrollment of 2,500. Founded in 1693 by royal charter, it is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and the ninth-oldest in the English-speaking world.


The Campus Minister is responsible for coordinating all of the pastoral, programmatic, and catechetical activity of the Catholic Campus Ministry at William & Mary. This person is responsible for developing student leaders, pastorally responding to student needs, and overseeing student programs and activities. The Campus Minister manages the Student Leadership Team (Board) and works in coordination with the Chaplain to develop ministry offerings to meet the needs of students.


As a focus of their ministry, the Campus Minister is responsible for the development and implementation of comprehensive campus ministry programs including aspects of Evangelization, Word, Worship, Community and Service that are consistent with Diocesan standards and norms. The Campus Minister responds to the needs and supports the mission of the Catholic Community by being a prophetic voice on campus, acting as liaison between the ministries and the university administration.

  • Ministry Program Oversight, Planning, Execution – 40%
  • Pastoral Care and Discipleship – 30%
  • Student Leadership Formation – 30%

Responsibilities

  • Advocate for the Catholic Church, especially in areas of morality and ethics, to the University community.
  • Respond to the pastoral needs of students, faculty, and staff as needed.
  • Develop, implement, and direct a comprehensive campus ministry program by:
    • Assisting Campus Ministry Chaplain with the faith formation of the community; developing and serving as catechist for formation programs
    • Facilitating community building
    • Developing student leadership and being a resource for student leaders
    • Supervising student programs and activities (including but not limited to music ministry, bible studies, faith sharing groups, retreats, community service projects, alternative break trips)
    • Assisting the Campus Ministry Chaplain with liturgical ministries
    • Providing logistical support for activities and events proposed by the student leadership.
  • Provide training and supervision to Campus Ministry Intern, and other key student workers and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with campus ministry staff and advisory board to assist with development and implementation of campus ministry programs to meet pastoral needs of the campus ministry community.
  • Collaborate with the Diocesan Office for Evangelization by participating in diocesan events (i.e. Encounter with Christ and Campus Ministry Summit) and campus ministry staff events (i.e. Fall Meeting and Spring Retreat and Conference).
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing
  • Through knowledge of Church teachings and theology with the ability to relate that knowledge to young adults in a campus ministry setting
  • Fluent in relevant church documents pertaining to ministry and evangelization, specifically:
    • Evangelii Nuntiandi (Evangelization in the Modern World)
    • Redemptoris Missio (Mission of the Redeemer)
    • Catechesi Tradendae (Catechesis in our Times)
    • Evangelii Gaudium (Joy of the Gospel)

  • Knowledge of adolescent and young adult development, spiritual development and application
  • Ability to articulate a clear ministry vision and set appropriate milestones to accomplishing the vision

Education Required:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in a field related to theology or pastoral ministry is required.
  • 3-5 years of prior experience in pastoral work, preferably campus ministry.


This is a full-time (minimum of 40 hours per week), exempt professional ministry position. Night and weekend work is necessary primarily during the academic year. The position also requires travel to campus ministers’ meetings and other diocesan events, reimbursable through the approved budget. The Campus Minister will work regularly with other staff of Catholic Campus Ministry at William & Mary, the Diocesan Associate Director for Campus Ministry of the Office for Evangelization, faculty, staff and students of William & Mary, as well as other Diocesan Campus Ministry staff.
