Overview:
Foley & Lardner LLP is currently seeking a Department Operations Manager to join our Business Law Department. This Business Law Practice and Operations Manager is responsible for the daily execution of business needs and operations of the department with a strong emphasis on its strategy, financial performance, and lawyer productivity and development. The Practice and Operations Manager will work in support of the Department Operating Officer (D.O.O.) and liaise with Practice Group Leaders in the department, Knowledge Management Counsel and will work with other firm legal and administrative teams to support the department’s goals associated with financial performance; pricing and project management; growth; talent development; diversity, equity & inclusion; human resources; technology and innovation; and other strategic areas of focus.
The incumbent will work closely with the D.O.O., as well as other department leadership and business professionals, to provide well-coordinated and strategically-aligned support.
Responsibilities:
Financial, Pricing and Business Planning & Management
  • Monitor financial and other performance metrics of the practice groups within the department, including with regard to revenue, utilization, realization, and productivity, and against annual goals. Identify trends/developments that require attention and action.
  • Collaborate with the Pricing and Practice Analytics (PPA) team to help structure, oversee and monitor pricing and alternative fee arrangements for clients and matters within the department with the objective of driving profitability.
  • Collaborate with D.O.O., PPA, Knowledge Management Counsel and department leadership to develop tools and templates for pricing and matter management purposes.
  • Work with PPA and Business Development teams on proposals, RFP responses and client engagement projects as needed.
  • Work with the D.O.O. to drive and support the annual business planning and budgeting process and budget and expense management.
Lawyer Recruiting, Professional Development and Staffing
  • Work with the D.O.O. and department leadership to support annual review and compensation processes for attorneys
  • Support D.O.O. and department leadership in hiring processes (lateral and entry-level), staffing and talent planning and analysis as well as processes and projects around the career lifecycle, including onboarding and integration and facilitating off boarding and retirement processes.
  • Support a variety of department and Legal Talent programming and professional development efforts.
Operational & Administrative Support
  • Provide operational and project management support to the D.O.O. and department leadership on special projects
  • Assist in coordinating and planning department meetings
  • Foster and encourage a culture of superior client service, responsiveness, innovation and collegiality.
  • Work with the General Counsel’s office to assist with a variety of issues and processes to support risk management and loss previsions' matters, including Outside Counsel Guideline review and assessment
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or related field; J.D. or M.B.A. desired
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience with a record of achievement and increasing responsibility
  • Law firm experience, including practice and pricing support, highly preferred
  • Familiarity with the corporate/transactional practice area in the legal service vertical preferred
  • Superior written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and sensitivity to the complexities of a partnership and national practices
