Position Description

An Open Continuous Announcement is an announcement that allows the Baldwin County Commission to establish a pool of qualified candidates. Any applications submitted are considered active for 6 months from the date of receipt. Selections may be made any time a vacancy becomes available.

Operate vehicle, carry out pre-trip and post-trip inspections, keep vehicle clean, and keep accurate reports concerning routes, passengers, vehicles and monies (fares), assist passengers within established guidelines. On-call as needed for emergency evacuation.

Part-time positions work no more than 29 hours per week on average. Additionally, part-time positions do not qualify for Baldwin County Commission benefits, with the exception of paid time off (PTO) and retirement through the Retirement Systems of Alabama.

Successful applicants must be at least 20 years old, insurable by the County’s insurance carrier, pass a criminal and motor vehicle background check and will be subject to a pre-employment drug test and physical.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain control of passengers while they are aboard the vehicle.
  • Secure and tie down wheelchairs properly.
  • Record the time of each pick up and drop off.
  • Record the odometer of each pick up and drop off.
  • Remember addresses and directions.
  • Properly perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle.
  • Report maintenance issues and safety hazards.
  • Maintain cleanliness of vehicle.
  • Maintain fuel level of vehicle.
  • Collect fares of passengers.
  • Assist passengers within established guidelines.
  • Provide information to passengers.
  • Speak professionally and clearly on radio.
  • Assist in emergency evacuation as needed.
  • Participate in training activities.

Education and Experience

  • Must have a valid Commercial Drivers License with Passenger Endorsement.
  • Criminal background check authorization required.
  • Pre-employment drug screening, random drug screening and post-accident drug and alcohol screenings are required.
Other Characteristics
  • Willing and able to be trained to properly secure a wheelchair.
  • Must be able to travel as deemed necessary.
  • Need to have transportation to work.
  • Willing to work non-standard hours as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Skills and ability to communicate effectively and clearly with general public mostly elderly and impaired.
  • Ability to keep detailed records and make accurate reports.
  • Ability to read road signs correctly.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of defensive driving.
  • Ability to follow routine oral and written instructions.
  • Math skills in order to keep correct figures on fares, adding miles traveled and gallons of gas and oil purchased.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Alabama State Highway Public Transportation Highway rules and regulations.
  • Ability to deal with general public in a professional, courteous and polite manner.
  • Ability and patience to work with individuals with special needs.
  • Ability to operate a direct link radio and to communicate effectively and clearly.
  • Ability to work in computer software programs and GPS units.
  • Ability to remember addresses and directions.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Physical Qualifications
  • Ability to see, read, write, stand, walk, reach, pull, push, bend, turn, climb, escort passengers, observe passengers, lift a minimum of 50 lbs unassisted and secure passengers and mobility devices.
  • Must have 20/20 vision or better with corrective lenses.
