This is a full-time, overtime eligible position on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College.

Position Purpose
This position reports to the Bookstore Manager and is responsible for processing online orders, creating
store displays, cashiering, designing merchandise, ordering, receiving, and pricing products, such as Evergreen art/office supplies, electronic products, ordering software, gift, and logo items, and other merchandise, updating the Bookstore website with new merchandise, stocking merchandise, and providing customer service at the Bookstore. The incumbent operates a Point-of-Sale (POS) cashiering system and an integrated inventory control system and directs the work of others.

Nature and Scope

Essential Functions

  • Accurately update and load new product into the Bookstore website.
  • Purchase products such as student art/office supplies, software, and electronics for resale in the college bookstore with a goal of increasing profits while keeping markdowns to a minimum; initiate and/or review procedures and methods for purchasing such products and recommend changes to the system to the store manager as needed.
  • Fill online orders by retrieving and printing orders using Nebraska inventory system, locate product, prepare order for pick up, or ship items using UPS.

  • Perform cashier duties, including operate electronic cash registers, handle cash, process credit/debit transactions, make calculations, balance the cash drawer, and perform related cashier procedures.
  • Use Publisher and Photoshop and work with Marketing staff and vendors to designing Evergreen branded merchandise, such as notebooks, pens, etc.
  • Offer outstanding customer service in a retail bookstore environment to students, faculty, staff and the public, such as greeting customers, answering phone calls, and helping customers find merchandise.
  • Enter items into bookstore POS system.
  • Track sales and accurately manage inventory levels to ensure availability of products within existing Bookstore guidelines.
  • Quickly and accurately price, receive, and stock merchandise in the college’s retail bookstore.
  • Run reports using Nebraska Bookstore system, such as restocking reports, sales reports, and purchase orders.
  • Regularly research and interview vendors to ensure the best quality and prices obtained.
  • Contact vendors to resolve issues with Purchase Orders and arrange for return of overstock, damaged, or defective merchandise.
  • Quickly create visually attractive displays and promotions for items for resale and develop merchandising plans for stocking and rearranging displays for maximum sales potential on a regular basis.
  • Regularly confer with students, faculty, and staff in determining which products to stock.
  • Open and close the store as assigned, operate registers, and be present in customer service area as needed.
  • Direct the work of student and temporary employees, as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Ability to effectively work under pressure and within time constraints in a busy public college bookstore environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff and the public.
  • Ability to quickly and accurately learn and apply knowledge of Bookstore rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for effectively promoting and selling products, such as marketing strategies, pricing, and sales control systems.
  • Ability to effectively and accurately operate electronic cash registers, handle cash, process credit/debit transactions, make calculations, balance the cash drawer, and related cashier procedures.
  • Ability to run and interpret reports and data to make sound decisions regarding merchandise buying and managing inventory levels.
  • Ability to quickly create visually attractive displays and to continually rearrange them for maximum sales potential.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use computerized POS system and integrated inventory control system.
  • Ability to quickly and effectively operate standard office equipment and computers with a Microsoft Windows operating system, including software, such as Outlook, Excel, Adobe Photoshop, and Publisher.
  • Ability to work with college students, faculty, and staff to determine product needs, including researching and recommending alternatives.
  • Ability to direct the work of student and temporary employees.
  • Physical ability to perform work that includes moving up to 50 pounds, reaching, stooping, twisting, bending, and/or crouching.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of full-time equivalent experience in retail buying or purchasing merchandise for resale, including working with vendors, pricing, inventory, and creating displays; or equivalent education/experience.
  • Two years of experience providing excellent customer service.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination.
  • Employees must comply with college policies related to masking and vaccination requirements, as well as Governor Inslee’s Proclamation 21-14.1, which requires employees of the college to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have received a medical or religious exemption prior to the first day of work.
