POSITION SUMMARY


Provides primary support to the respiratory, home medical equipment, and supply sections of the company’s Home Medical Equipment (HME) department. This position is critical in the department’s ability to meet and maintain compliance requirements with the FDA, State of Wisconsin, and The Joint Commission. The main responsibilities include technical work in the performance of problem analysis, repairing, maintaining and calibrating direct patient care electronic equipment (e.g., respiratory equipment, bilirubin lights).

Work is performed primarily in a shop bench environment, but the incumbent may also provide services in patients’ homes and extended care facilities. This position monitors the critical maintenance of the home care equipment, including keeping detailed records of past and future records of maintenance and repairs and providing training to operators on the correct setup, calibration, and operation of patient care equipment.

Communication with clinical staff on a day-to-day basis is accomplished using knowledge of physiology and medical terminology. This position may be called upon to evaluate prototypes or new equipment (with little or no printed information available) to ensure the safety of patients and staff in the operation of the equipment.

This position may be required to work outside their normal schedule. The Biomedical Equipment Technician works independently and under the supervision of the Warehouse Operations Manager.


TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Maintain current knowledge of a broad array of home medical equipment including but not limited to respiratory equipment, bilirubin lights, etc.
  • Repair and maintain patient and staff equipment in a timely, cost-effective manner. When unable to repair internally, coordinate with outside repair company.
  • Maintain documentation of repairs, manuals, warranties and other related documentation.
  • Train other staff on proper use, basic maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Assist inventory staff to maintain adequate inventory levels in a cost-effective manner. Verify warranty repair expense.
  • Provide input into development and implementation of policies and procedures regarding equipment repair and maintenance in accordance with manufacturer and regulatory guidelines, including but not limited to Joint Commission, State of Wisconsin and FDA.
  • Identify and attend continuing education opportunities including workshops, in-service, and/or training as appropriate to perform job function.
  • Keep work area clean and organized.
  • Other duties as deemed appropriate by management.


JOB REQUIREMENTS


Licenses:

Education:


  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a relevant technical college program preferred.


Experience:


  • Two or more years as a biomedical engineering technician or equivalent in a health care setting preferred.


Miscellaneous:


  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of electronic and mechanical equipment operation, diagnosis and repair.
  • Knowledge of human physiology and medical terminology preferred.
  • Ability to maintain and update records on a computer-based maintenance system is required.
