As a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (BESS) – Imaging Systems supporting the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), National Biomedical Contractor Support Services IDIQ project, you will be trusted to provide exceptional biomedical services that contribute to improving Veterans’ health and well-being. This mission guides the Office of Healthcare Technology Management’s (HTM) support for patient care to provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

The ideal BESS – Imaging Systems will perform duties related to technology assessment, technology implementation, and the maintenance and sustainment of biomedical equipment, devices, and systems for direct support of clinical operations. This position also supports the medical device integration and interface for the VA’s Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM). The Cerner Corporation’s electronic health record (EHR) will replace the VA’s existing EHR. The Biomedical Technician/BESS – Imaging Systems will assist in the medical device integration and interfacing with selected clinical systems for a more seamless diagnosis and care documentation process. This Biomedical Technician/BESS – Imaging Systems needs to possess skills associated with the operating processes and information technology aspects contained within radiology and imaging systems, and therefore can support the integration and transmission of digital imagery from the radiology system to the patient record.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs biomedical services to support effective and proper functioning of hospital imaging systems to include CT, MRI, X-Ray, and Linear Accelerator.
  • Performs inspections and quality assurance evaluations for new and/or repaired systems.
  • Performs preventive maintenance checks and inspections in accordance with manufacturer’s literature and departmental standing operating procedures.
  • Performs initial troubleshooting on system/equipment malfunctions and determines course of action for organic or vendor maintenance support.
  • Works with the information technology staff to develop VLAN requirements for radiology modalities and separation into vendor specific VLANs.
  • Works with the information technology staff and biomedical/information technology staff to manage modality updates, networking changes to new VLAN infrastructure, and processes for communicating/data transmission through the Compass Router.
  • Assists the biomedical engineer with technology assessment and implementation to support the determination of specifications for radiology and imaging system replacement and modernization requirements, installation requirements, staff training, and activation process and procedures for new systems.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • An associate degree or higher in an applied science or equivalent military training
  • 3 + years of hospital or healthcare experience performing medical equipment maintenance, with a minimum of one-year specialized experience with medical imaging equipment
  • Comprehensive knowledge of imaging techniques, technologies, radiological practices and procedures
  • Demonstrated competency in maintaining medical imaging systems
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve highly complex breakdowns that have an immediate risk to patient safety
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain and troubleshoot networked medical imaging equipment to include VLAN configuration, IP addressing, sub-netting, and network security, and build, configure, repair and install workstations and servers in imaging and non-imaging environments
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize and maintain computer and server based medical equipment, medical record databases, and proprietary and generic software
  • Experience with TCP/IP, HL7, networking, and DICOM standards.
  • Understanding of regulatory agencies’ requirements, industry regulatory requirements and International Standard Organization standards.
  • Skill in using advanced radiological test equipment such as radiation dosimeters, calibration phantoms, high voltage testing devices, KV and MA meters and monitor calibration devices.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical literature, schematics, and drawings.
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certification as a Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES) is highly desired
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise pertaining to hospital imaging systems and direct experience supporting hospital level radiology department array of imaging modalities and systems.

The likely salary range for this position is $68,000 - $102,000, this is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary; rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
