Southwestern Community Action Council is a private non-profit agency whose mission is to facilitate the social and economic well-being of low-income families in Cabell, Lincoln, Mason, and Wayne counties in West Virginia. We are a leader in the development and provision of a variety of community programs and services provided by qualified, highly trained, client focused staff. Our programs include Early Head Start / Head Start, the Mason County Homeless Shelter, Weatherization Assistance, Case Management / Homemaker Services, Senior Community Services (Mature Worker), and Veteran Supportive Services.
We currently have an opening for a Behavioral Specialist for our Head Start/Early Head Start program in Huntington, WV to join our team and achieve great things together.

Pay Details (subject to change)

Level I: $19.25/hour Level II: $21.05/hour Level III: $23.05/hour

Level Qualifications

Level I. B.A. Degree in Psychology, Early Childhood Special Education or related area.

Level II. B.A. Degree in Psychology, Early Childhood Special Education, or related area plus 15 graduate hours.

Level III. M.A./M.S. Degree in Psychology, Early Childhood Special Education; or related area.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must meet Level I qualifications.
  • Must have: the ability to observe, review and analyze data
  • be able to enhance teaching practices to meet school readiness goals
  • follow Head Start performance standards
  • have the ability to coordinate, organize and manage
  • self-motivated with ability to work without direct supervision
  • good writing skills
  • good communication and problem solving skills with the ability to work as a team
  • good computer skills
  • valid driver’s license with safe driving record.
  • Must pass drug screen and background check.

Preferred Qualifications

Level II or Level III qualifications.

Position Details (This is a sampling of duties and responsibilities of this position)

  • Responsible for observing and assessing students with behavior issues.
  • Collect data on the student’s behaviors and share with appropriate individuals.
  • Determine behavior capabilities of students.
  • Work with families, teachers, and other relevant personnel to devise a behavior plan for the student.
  • Coordinate between other agencies and HS/EHS staff and families to implement behavioral interventions.
  • Analyze the behavioral interventions to determine their success.
  • Communicate with families and appropriate staff about students’ progress.
  • Assist caregivers in facilitating behavioral interventions.
  • Maintains records of students’ special education reports, services provided, and behavioral data.
  • Must travel to different locations within our four county (Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln, an Mason) area to work with staff, families, children and other agencies as needed to provide support.
  • Must travel to students’ homes to meet with families or other caregivers as needed.
  • Must have the ability to train other people to apply behavior management techniques effectively.
  • Must know and understand state and federal laws and regulations associated with special education.
  • Must be able to handle emotionally charged situations.
  • Report possible cases of child abuse, neglect or endangerment to the proper authorities.
