Overview:
Provide direct instructional services to students under the general supervision of a licensed or certified special education teacher. Assist the assigned teacher as requested in all areas of the daily classroom routine. Assist the children as requested by the teacher; maintain health and safety of the classroom environment by performing assigned tasks; prepare classroom materials as requested by the teacher. Assist psychologist, behavioral personnel and educational staff with the implementation of school-wide positive behavioral support systems. Classroom assignment is subject to change based on program needs.
Responsibilities:
Primary duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

1. Professional Duties


a. Under teacher supervision, assist with individual children and small groups.
b. Attend staff and team meetings as assigned.
c. Appropriately participate in daily planning sessions with teachers to understand the educational and behavioral interventions.
d. Fulfill specific assignments, as required by teacher and behavioral personnel.
e. Participate in maintaining appropriate visual supplements to support school-wide PBS.
f. Under direction of teacher, maintain an appropriate educational environment with respect to health and safety.
g. Provide adequate bus, playground and hallway supervision.
h. Help with preparation of snack and clean-up activities.
i. Perform related duties, as required.
j. Under direction of teacher, provide children with personal care and assistance in all activities of daily living.
k. Conduct individual and group activities under supervision of teacher.
l. Facilitate appropriate communications and interactions between adults and peers.
m. Carry out classroom-specific and individual behavior management plan under supervision of teacher.
n. Demonstrate basic knowledge of PBS strategies and the use of visuals to support those strategies.
o. Work under the supervision of psychologist and teacher to implement preventative strategies throughout the program.
2. Professional Behavior
a. Cooperate and conduct self in a manner appropriate to school setting.
b. Adhere to program-specific policies and procedures.
c. Perform other assigned duties, as required.
3. Professional Development
a. Attend and participate in required in-services to demonstrate fifteen (15) hours of approved training in the first six (6) months of employment and thirty (30) hours of approved training within two (2) years.
b. Attend and participate in supervision and implement recommendations appropriately.
c. Attend meetings with classroom teacher.
4. Adhere to general policies of the organization/regulators, including:
a. Code of Ethical Conduct.
b. Departmental in-service education program requirements; may need to fulfill hours outside of agency hours.
c. Job related self-development education activities.
d. Quality Improvement activities.
e. Policies and procedures (attendance, punctuality, appearance, professional attitude, etc.)
f. Regulatory requirements.
g. Emergency/disaster preparedness protocols.
h. Fire prevention and safety protocols.
i. Infection control practices and procedures.
j. Annual physical examination and Mantoux testing.
5. Performs other related duties, as required:
a. Address the special needs of each age group served.
b. Demonstrate understanding of the needs of children and visitors for each specific age group.
c. Address safety and psychological needs of the special age groups, as appropriate, in the performance of work activities.
d. Address the needs of special groups, hearing impaired, physically challenged and various issues relating to the program and facility.
e. Maintain child and family confidentiality. Refrain from discussing the child in front of him/her.
f. Be consistently courteous and considerate, in person and on the telephone, in interactions with children and others such as family, visitors, vendors and other employees.
g. Exhibit the “At Your Service” attitude, i.e. smile, use positive eye contact and be friendly, open and approachable.
h. Respond quickly to children and/or parent/guardian’s request, refer to appropriate member of the care team if necessary and inform supervisor of actions taken.
i. Promote positive co-worker relationships, teamwork and cooperation.
j. Work collaboratively and be respectful of others.
k. Take individual responsibility for providing outstanding service quality.

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Working towards a valid New York State Certificate as a Teaching Assistant, Level I within six (6) months of employment.
  • Fingerprint and SCR clearance also required.
  • Experience working with preschool special education population.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work effectively and cooperatively.
  • Experience working with preschool population preferred.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:

Physical aspects may include, but are not limited to: lifting and transferring of any student within the school setting.
