As the nation’s leading Child Care Program, we believe children should have a place to explore their interests and talents. We serve 1325 children in 9 school districts at 40 locations. Our state-licensed program reaches 58 elementary schools and 1 Pre-K program in Pierce and Kitsap counties.

As the Before and After Lead Teacher, you will support the YMCA Child Care Program year-round to serve our community with a variety of activity options to explore and develop interests and talents of the youth with a focus on safety, health, social growth, and academic enhancement for children to have fun and thrive in our care. You will help in providing balanced recreation, education, and character development through enriched activities full of fun and friendship.


In this position, you will be able to use your skills for:

  • Come alongside school personnel to support academic goals and plans for children and the school.
  • Conduct parent conferences, and maintain positive relationships and effective communication with parents.
  • Ensure program remains in conformance with all YMCA policies and procedures as well as the Washington Administrative Code.
  • Promote a positive environment that fosters fun, safety, and our YMCA values which includes implementation of proximity praise, specific action compliments, and our 8 Points of Leadership.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and leadership to new site staff and create follow-up plans throughout the school year.
  • Plan and develop a daily schedule of classroom routines and activities.
  • Provide an integrated, child-centered, comprehensive curriculum and multicultural environment, which meets the needs of every child, including those with disabilities.
Minimum Requirements

  • You enjoy working with school-aged children and have previous experience working with children in a childcare setting.
  • You want to have fun at work!
  • You are at least 21 years old.
  • You have two years of full-time management experience.
  • You have 12 or more college quarter credits in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, and Elementary Education or equivalent educational background in courses relating to early learning or child development.
  • You are committed to completing STARS trainings within 60 days of hire and will complete all WA State educational requirements within 4 years from hire (the YMCA will support you in achieving this state requirement).
  • You are certified in Infant-Child CPR and Basic First Aid or are willing to obtain certification within 30 days of hire (the YMCA will assist in this process).
  • You are able to complete a TB skin test and provide proof of MMR vaccination before the first day of employment (the YMCA will assist in this process).
  • You are willing to complete needed background and reference checks before the first day of employment (the YMCA will assist in this process).
  • You are able and willing to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on your first day, and other online and in-person training as required including Food Handlers permit (cost reimbursable).
  • You have the willingness and ability to travel to and from different locations if needed.


Starting Wage:
$20.00+ per hour, depending on qualifications

Hours: Full-Time, 40 hours per week
