Automation Systems Group
The Automation Systems Group is responsible for the design, construction and support of innovative data center automation and control infrastructure. The department collaborates with Operations, Sales, Engineering, Information Technology and Management to ensure the system continues to fulfill Vantage customer requirements. Automation Systems works closely with partner contractors to come up with the best design and helps manage these partners to success by providing accurate requirements, goals, and timelines. In addition to design and construction, we are also responsible for the technical requirements of the Operations department involving troubleshooting, calibrating, and repairing mission critical control systems throughout all Vantage locations.
Position Description
The Automation Operations Specialist is responsible for the overall functional health of critical monitoring and control systems. This responsibility includes oversight of facility acceptance testing and Site Operations technical support. Requirements for this position include full familiarity with control systems arrangements and control components for Power and Cooling systems from the field component to the integrated systems level. The Automation Operations Specialist understands the functions of direct control devices and logic controllers as well as the extended effects of failure of those devices in the larger context of systems automation.
The Automation Operations Specialist has familiarity with sensors and monitoring devices and the ability to ensure data reliability. The Automation Operations Specialist acts as an advisor to Site Operations and has enough experience to guide technicians through effective troubleshooting. The Automation Operations Specialist regularly interfaces the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering teams, Software Development team and Site Operations teams. You will be on call to troubleshoot existing automation systems in a live, mission-critical environment, and assist in complete startup, commissioning, and validation procedures on new and existing data center infrastructure.
Essential Job Functions
  • Part of a rotating, 24 hour / 7 days a week / 365 days a year, on-call team of Automation Operations Technicians responding to high priority incidents related to building automation.
  • Maintain and deploy updated versions of PLC applications for existing control systems with minimal supervision.
  • Complete PLC software application modifications in an online, critical environment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve PLC, network, and other critical control system issues during an incident.
  • Support data center commissioning activities, validation of hardware and software systems, alarming, data recovery, and functional logic.
  • Work with leading edge automation systems from large scale industrial controls vendors.
  • Provide full technical and troubleshooting support Site Operations teams when responding to control system failures.
  • Provide system reliability feedback to the Design Engineering teams for future design considerations.
Duties
  • Collaborate with members of the Reliability Engineering team and Site Operations team for sustaining existing automation architecture.
  • Work with Engineering and Construction teams to ensure the reliability of new and modified installations.
  • Review construction equipment submittals, identify potential deficiencies, and evaluate maintenance feasibility.
  • Attend factory witness testing to verify and validate equipment functionality.
  • Review site commissioning plans and ensure the thoroughness of control system startup testing.
  • Develop risk management plans that will anticipate reliability-related risks that could adversely impact plant operation.
  • Ensure data communications from monitored systems remains intact and data is properly collected and stored.
  • Analyze and process system collected data and recommend improvements to site operations and maintenance strategies.
  • Perform system component upgrades as required to ensure reliability and combat obsolescence.
  • Perform Root-Cause Failure Analysis and facilitate corrective action.
  • Design maintenance programs to minimize control systems maintenance complexity and reduce maintenance down time.
  • Design appropriate site response procedures based on potential control system failures.
  • Provide at request guidance and technical support to Site Teams.
  • Ensure Site Teams are proficient with Building Management Systems and controls system operation.
Job Requirements
  • PLC programming experience with Rockwell Automation, Carel and GE systems.
  • 3 – 5 years PLC Experiencing.
  • Modbus TCP/IP and RTU, BacNET and Ethernet/IP configuration knowledge.
  • Ability to read and interpret Electrical/Mechanical one-line diagrams.
  • Experience with Ignition HMI software.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of total work time.
  • Ability to travel internationally.
