DESCRIPTION

The University of California San Diego is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Athletics Equipment/ Game Support. UC San Diego, located in La Jolla, in the San Diego Metropolitan area, enrolls over 35,000 students, earned recognition as one of the world’s premier research universities, and is ranked as one of the top-10 public universities in the nation.

Triton Athletics consistently ranks as one of the most successful athletic programs, ranking among the top 7 nationally in the Learfield Director’s Cup on 13 different occasions and has finished second overall three times.

The incumbent will assist in the Intercollegiate Athletics Program, focusing on athletics equipment. Assist in the day-to-day operations under the direction of the Equipment Operations Coordinator, supporting UC San Diego Athletics’ 23 intercollegiate sports. Assisting with the functions of the Athletics Equipment Room in accordance with University, conference and NCAA regulations. The Intern will learn to oversee inventory control of new apparel as well as organizing the disbursement of gear to student-athletes. The Intern will train a staff of student assistants in areas of apparel inventory, gear issuance and laundry. The intern will learn to organize, prioritize, and schedule work assignments for themselves and the students. The position works closely with various ICA personnel including coaches.

The intern will learn purchasing, equipment research, budget management, and contract negotiation. The Operations Internship is a non-paid internship that allows for the opportunity to gain knowledge in the many facets of supplying our sports programs with the proper gear and equipment needed to compete at the highest level. This time will be spent researching innovations as well as possible upgrades into new or currently used equipment and the coordination with vendors for purchases. Strong organizational and communication skills as well as the knowledge of using various types of software and computer programs will be gained.

The incumbent must follow the athletic philosophy consistent with that of the UC San Diego Athletic Department and a commitment to diversity in all of its forms.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency in the use of basic computer programs relevant to job duties.

  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making.

  • Current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; willingness to engage with constituents, on and off campus and with individuals of all ages and of varying backgrounds.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Work schedule will be arranged with supervisor, but often includes evenings, weekends and holidays.

  • Background check required.
