PURPOSE OF POSITION:*
To provide quality health care to intercollegiate athletes at Southwestern as well as assist College administration/staff/faculty in the retention of student-athletes.

Description of Essential Functions
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Athletic Training Program Oversight (90% of Time)

  • Conduct and organize all phases of a meaningful athletic training program.
  • Maintain current and build new relationships with the local medical community and accredited athletic training education programs in the region.
  • Examine athletes for possible injuries. Evaluate extent of injury and perform emergency treatment of athletes. Refer injured athletes to physician if deemed necessary.
  • Treat injuries in accordance with American Red Cross First Aid guidelines or physician’s instructions
  • Evaluate and advise whether or not an athlete can continue to participate and when an athlete can return to participation after an injury.
  • Operate modalities such as medcolator, ultra-sound equipment, hydroculator pads, ice immersion and cold packs, hot and cold treatment; rehabilitate with orthotron.
  • Tape body part(s) of individuals who need tape for prevention of injury and/or provide support to prevent recurring injuries and check taping job to be sure it is correctly applied.
  • Prepare athletic injury and treatment reports and maintain records. Prepare and submit athletic insurance reports.
  • Check for operating condition of all equipment and maintain equipment and treatment rooms in clean and sanitary condition.
  • Accompany athletic teams on trips and attend home games, as assigned.
  • Assign students to perform duties as needed.

General Duties (10% of Time)

  • Demonstrate continued professional growth by staying current in and expanding knowledge of subject area and teaching techniques through a plan of professional development. Attend conferences and professional meetings.
  • Assist the Athletic Director with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine, Athletic Training, Education with Health and/or Physical Education endorsements, or equivalent in Exercise Science, Fitness Management, or a related field.

1-3 years of experience as an Athletic Trainer in an educational setting with a variety of athletes and athletic programs.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using the English language with or without the use of an interpreter. Ability to effectively communicate orally with groups and/or individual, and deal with peers, the public and the community in a positive, empathetic and professional manner.

Demonstrate knowledge in the technical aspects of athletic training, and various athletic activities including, but not limited to, soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, wrestling, track & field, softball, baseball, swimming and golf.

Ability to work effectively with populations representing diverse social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds, life experiences and abilities, including community members, students, faculty, and staff.

  • Ability to follow established procedures and work independently to accomplish those procedures. Ability to explain established policies and procedures using judgment and diplomacy.
  • Ability and willingness to manage a flexible work schedule with self-discipline, including travel, various hours and possible weekends/evenings, as well as work days at other college locations.
  • Ability to write and communicate at a professional level utilizing a high level of computer skills sufficient to use software such as word processing, spreadsheets and data bases to produce correspondence, documents and reports as required by the position.
  • Working knowledge of and a commitment to NWAC intercollegiate rules and regulations.
  • Exhibit a high level of computer literacy, sufficient to use software such as email, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases to produce correspondence, documents and reports. Ability to use Internet, Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel as needed. Able to learn and function in the College’s information management system.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants for this position possessing one or more of the following knowledge, skills and abilities with receive preferred consideration through the selection process.

  • Previous higher education experience
  • Master’s degree

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSES:

  • CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain
  • Licensed athletic trainer (LAT) certification through Oregon Health Association or ability to obtain.
  • Certification from the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC)
