Athletic Field Maintenance is seeking candidates that have a passion for providing exceptional customer service and a commitment to serving others. Dedicated to the maintenance and management of City of Raleigh athletic fields, this position works as a member of a team to implement professional maintenance standards and procedures involving park maintenance.

The Athletic Field Maintenance Worker position will work at the following two (2) locations:

Buffaloe Road Athletic Park
5900 Buffaloe Rd
Raleigh, NC 27604

Walnut Creek Athletic Complex
1201 Sunnybrook Road
Raleigh, NC 27610

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs athletic field maintenance tasks such as grooming, marking, painting, and so forth to provide proper set up of facilities for games, practices, and tournaments.
  • Repairs field fencing, performs litter removal, assists in field renovation projects, maintains and cleans facilities.
  • Assists with landscaping tasks such as mowing, edging, blowing, sod removal/replacement, and so forth.
  • Maintains maintenance records and preventative maintenance schedules for all assigned equipment.
  • Assists City in cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and one year of maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing/Certifications:


  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Additional Information

Knowledge of:


  • Working knowledge of athletic fields and equipment used to maintain athletic fields. (Sand Pro, line markers, paint machines, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of basic computer systems.
  • Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work.
  • Basic mathematical concepts.
  • Basic filing and record-keeping principles.
  • Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices.
  • Uses and properties of supplies and equipment.
  • Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations (based on assignment).

Skill In:
  • Ability to perform manual labor necessary to maintain athletic fields.
  • Ability to perform basic math computations to lay out athletic fields accurately and by provided specifications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Following directions and meeting standards.
  • Providing attention to detail in assignments.
  • Proofreading and error correction.
  • Performing basic math calculations.
  • Comprehending reference books and manuals.
  • Operating assigned tools and equipment.
  • Organizing and maintaining records and files.
  • Interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards (based on assignment).
  • Providing customer service.
  • Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications.
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
