GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Office of the Wyoming State Archaeologist (OWSA) is hiring ten At-Will Employee Contract (AWEC) Cultural Resource Specialist positions from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2024. The positions support the welfare of Wyoming’s citizens and Wyoming’s economy and help fulfill two Wyoming Statutes (WYO. STAT. § 7-4-106 and WYO. STAT. § 36-4-106) and compliance with 36 CFR Part 79 (Curation of Federally-owned and Administered Archaeological Collections) by private and Federal stakeholders in Wyoming.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

• Assist in fieldwork and report writing associated with archaeological surveys of Wyoming lands conducted through OWSA’s survey section.
• Partially responsible for administering 36 CFR Part 79, which establishes Federal guidelines for the long-term storage of archaeological objects recovered from Federal lands during development projects critical to supporting Wyoming’s economy. OWSA manages the University of Wyoming Archaeological Repository (UWAR), the only federally-recognized repository in Wyoming. UWAR receives thousands of objects a year from over 100 stakeholders recovered during archaeological projects undertaken in compliance with the Antiquities Act, the Reservoir Salvage Act, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to students working towards degrees in anthropology, history, historic preservation, or other cultural resources-related disciplines.

KNOWLEDGE:

• 
  OWSA’s AWEC positions require specialized knowledge related to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Archaeology and Historic Preservation, including identifying archaeological objects, using Geographic Information Systems software, technical writing skills, and knowledge of Federal guidelines dictating the preservation of archaeological resources.

• Some travel may be required.
