Job Summary:

The Assistant Director of Pharmacy Services assists in directing, managing and leading all aspects of pharmacy operations, programs and personnel. Areas of focus may include inpatient, outpatient ambulatory, clinics or specialty areas and programs. The Assistant Director of Pharmacy Services takes an active role in budget management, quality improvement initiatives, medication use strategy and innovation, and staff development, and partners with the Assistant Director of Clinical Operations to execute clinical initiatives requiring pharmacy operational input. The scope and complexity of the position requires a diverse and highly developed skill set including time-management, communication, creativity, vision, teamwork, , leadership, clinical knowledge base and skills, mentorship, change management, scholarship, and teaching.

Responsibilities:

· Assists the Director with initiating, scheduling and directing day-to-day operations of the Pharmacy · Assumes leadership responsibility for the Pharmacy in the absence of the Director of Pharmacy · Develops a workflow plan for daily pharmacy activities (internally/externally) and adapts the workflow as necessary · Works with the Director of Pharmacy to ensure that pharmacy standards and quality are met and maintained and that systems and procedures comply with governmental and accreditation requirements · Develops, manages and leads the provision of safe, timely, efficient, equitable, effective, and patient-centered pharmacy patient care services and operations for areas of responsibility · Participates in development of department's strategic plan by identifying and developing business cases for pharmacy patient care services based on anticipated future needs, practice advancement and organizational priorities · Serves as the pharmacy management team liaison to interdisciplinary team members · Participates and/or leads, as pharmacy representative, quality improvement initiatives and projects · Develops and oversees practice audits to ensure desired processes and outcomes are achieved · Assists Director of Pharmacy with budget maintenance, controls and manages operational labor expenses and overtime expenditure, and maximizes efficiency (e.g. labor, workload and inventory) of associated pharmacy programs · Assists the Director of Pharmacy or designee with the oversight of the Pharmacy IT and Purchasing groups · Provides direct oversight and management of pharmacy operations managers, ensures goals and objectives are met according to identified timelines · Monitors and evaluates staff performance, recognizing highperformers and holding poor performers accountable to department and institutional standards, providing mentoring, coaching and discipline as appropriate · Identifies and deals with personnel issues in a proactive and timely manner, with appropriate follow-up as necessary, and assists the Director in facilitation of employee relations issues · Manages employee leaves of absence and family medical leaves · Participates in recruitment, interviewing and hiring of professional and technical staff, and coordinates staff orientation, training and competency assessment · Attends and actively participates in hospital and departmental meetings/committees · Develops and maintains expertise in change management tools and theories · Performs special projects as needed Qualifications/Requirements: Knowledge of laws and regulations regarding pharmacy, including regulatory and accreditation standards, USP reference standards and 340B Drug Pricing Program. Knowledge of pharmacy services within an ever changing environment of acute care within an integrated health system. Knowledge of external medication related quality metrics. Demonstrated skill in problem solving, team building, decision making, time management and strategic planning, developing goals and objectives, and establishing priorities. Ability to work in a complex team environment and collaborate with external and internal professionals and other customers. Ability to inspire confidence, appropriate risk taking and achievement of high standards. Self-starter with a willingness to try new ideas. Good judgment and ability to act decisively at the right time. Ability to persuade others and develop consensus. Effective communication skills both in written and verbal presentation with a communication style that is open and fosters trust, credibility and understanding

Experience:

Required: 6 years of experience as a pharmacist in a hospital setting Management experience required Proficient in MS Office Suite, Internet and email, computers, word processing, spreadsheets and databases Experience with sterile compounding, automated dispensing cabinets, pharmacy clinical systems and prescriber order entry systems Excellent written and oral communication skills Ability to accurately analyze data and make meaningful change Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position Preferred: 8-10 years Health System experience 5+ years management experience PGY-1 or PGY-2 preferred Completion of an accredited Health System Pharmacy Administration Residency

Education:

Pharm D degree from an accredited institution required. Master's degree in pharmacy administration, healthcare administration, business or other relevant subject area preferred

Licenses/Certifications:

Possession of a valid license and current registration as a Pharmacist issued by New York State Department of Education
