Job Summary
As an Associate Professor of Special Education, you will teach undergraduate and graduate level courses, be involved in course and curriculum development, work effectively with diverse populations of students, colleagues, and members of the community at large, engage in productive research and grant seeking activities, and serve on dissertation committees. The Special Education, Associate Professor may be asked to coordinate an academic program. It is anticipated that this position will also require service to the Soaring Eagle Academy at FGCU, a grant-funded Comprehensive Postsecondary Transition Program that prepares adults with intellectual disabilities for employment. Job Description
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of special education, as well as instructional methods.
  • Serving on and/or chairing dissertation committees for studies related to special education.
  • Supervises student teachers, advises students, and conducts research.
  • Collaborates both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction resulting in improved student learning.
  • Engages in active service to the department, college, University, community, and the profession.
  • Maintains an active agenda of scholarly activities according to Boyer’s principles.
  • Provides service to a Comprehensive Transition Program for students with intellectual disability.
  • Assists in recruiting and retention of students.
  • Participates in accreditation activities and assists with program evaluation and accreditation tasks.
  • May be asked to coordinate either the undergraduate or graduate special education program.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Additional Job Description
Required Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) from a regionally accredited institution in Special Education or a closely related field..
  • Demonstrated ability to teach using a variety of instructional modalities including both face-to-face and virtual classes.
  • An established record of academic research and service sufficient to merit appointment at the rank of Associate Professor at Florida Gulf Coast University.
  • Three (3) years of experience teaching students with disabilities in PK-12 schools.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supervising field experiences for teacher candidate internships in public schools..
  • Experience teaching students with disabilities in secondary school settings and with helping students transition to adult life. .
  • Expertise in any/all of the following: assessment, classroom management, emotional and behavioral disorders, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, transition.
  • Experience serving on and/or chairing dissertation committees.
  • Experience with and/or extensive knowledge of Comprehensive Postsecondary Transition Programs (CTPs) or Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disability (TPSID).
  • Experience securing and/or managing grants and/or participation grant seeking activities. This includes development and oversight of grant budgets.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Experience or commitment to the use of technology in distance learning & university teaching. Interest in collaborating both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction resulting in improved student learning. Must value continued scholarship and service to the school and university.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics and needs of students and young adults with intellectual disabilities and how to assist them with preparation for employment and adult life.
  • Knowledge of best-practices for the instruction and transitioning of individuals with intellectual disability.
  • Ability to teach a full range of special education courses at undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Ability to serve on and/or chair dissertation committees.
