Their plan – produce hand-crafted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that reflected the best of California’s Central Coast. Job Summary:

The Assistant Winemaker assists in supervising all day-to-day cellar operations, including harvest, bulk wine, barrels, bottling preparation, sanitation, and cellar organization and cleanliness. This position provides winemaking technical support to the Winemaker and production staff. Assist in driving adherence to FFW goals and core values: Safety, Environmental, Quality, Courtesy, Efficiency and Excellence requirements. Works closely with multiple departments such as vineyard operations, marketing, sales, hospitality, and winemaking operations to achieve high quality wines.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Full cycle observation of the grape crop through harvest, wine production and bottling
  • Assist with logistics and scheduling of grape deliveries
  • Assist in maintaining bottling quality control and laboratory record keeping
  • Carry out wine and juice bench trails for both analysis and blending
  • Assist with logistics and scheduling of bulk wine shipments
  • Collaborate with other FFW wineries as needed for lab analysis, crush logistics, etc.
  • Pull samples as needed
  • Oversee quality and efficiency of sorting line during harvest, with input from WM to achieve quality goals
  • Manage daily work order generation and processing in coordination with winemaker
  • Assist winemaker in sensory analysis and blending
  • Organize winemaker blends and instructions
  • Assist winemaker in barrel and other winemaking product evaluations
  • Work with and supervise the Winery Lab personnel and operations
  • Verify that proper cellar and sanitation procedures are followed
  • Coordinate and conduct tastings and lab trials needed for winemaking decisions
  • Research and develop winemaking techniques and experimental trials to improve wine quality
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining all FFW quality management systems (QMS)
  • Develop and further refine Cellar Sanitation Procedures
  • Assist with grape sampling and monitoring of vineyards as requested

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with advance knowledge of Excel
  • Must have a thorough understanding of databases and database management
  • Bulk wine tracking experience is preferred
  • Continuous Improvement mindset is sought and appreciated
  • Ability to independently investigate anomalies in analytical or sensory results is valued
  • Knowledge of vineyard sampling and monitoring is required
  • Must be willing to work and advance with technology
  • Must have the ability to read, analyze and interpret financial reports and legal documents
  • Must be able to respond to inquiries or complaints from coworkers, customers, regulatory agencies and members of the business community
  • Must have the ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and media
  • Able to work a flexible schedule as needed, including extra hours during harvest

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a cellar, lab or enologist position. Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license and acceptable driving record for insurance
