Who We Are:

Teacher’s assistant provides support to a lead teacher in a classroom. Assistants should help reinforce the academic and social-emotional growth and development of all children in their care, which may include infants, toddlers, and/or preschool age children. They should also help provide a nurturing, comfortable and safe classroom environment that is age appropriate.

Teachers assistants should also comply with the codes and regulations of Illinois, City of Chicago, and DCFS standards, as well as any other governing contracting agencies; and work collegially with their lead teacher, other staff members and directors of Smarty Pants Early Learning Center.

Teacher’s Assistant responsibilities shall include:

• Work under the direction of the lead teacher to ensure a nurturing, healthy, safe, clean and developmentally appropriate environment for the children
• Help maintain the cleanliness, safety, and health of the classroom and any areas where the children are present
• Assist with the preparation of daily developmentally-appropriate lessons and activities (under the guidance of the lead teacher and curriculum planning guide)
• Actively engage the children during lesson, play time, mealtimes, etc.
• Assist lead by ensuring materials and equipment is prepared for lessons, meals, activities, bathroom breaks, etc.
• Help provide responsive care to all children by adapting daily routines and plans to the interests and needs of the individual child and the group
• Maintains ongoing, open communication with lead teachers, associate directors, directors, and any other staff members on a need-to-know basis
• Helps perform daily health checks regarding hygiene, safety, and overall well-being of the children
• If needed, helps to complete observations of the children’s development in all domains
• Assist with food prep/placement at meal times as needed, following specific food/milk restrictions
• Assist in bathroom breaks for children, changing diapers/pull ups (documenting as needed), and washing hands, etc.
• Cooperates with all staff, supervisors, management, and volunteers
• Completes yearly trainings, along with a minimum of 15 hours of professional development
• Reports all staffing and classroom concerns to supervisors in a timely manner
• Maintain a clean and organized classroom, ensuring all daily needs of the classroom are prepared for and restocked as needed (supplies, lessons, activities, etc.)
• In accordance with our “team” philosophy, the person filling this position may be required to carry out and assist with other tasks in addition to the duties listed on this job description

Skills & Abilities:

• Solid understanding of classroom activities and teaching best practices
• Must have a compassionate and positive attitude
• Early childhood/child development knowledge and experience
• Good communication, problem solving, and priority setting skills as well as maintaining an overall positive and professional attitude/disposition
• Ability to help plan, organize and implement educational activities and lessons
• Ability to protect the well-being of children
• Must be able to manage confidential information
• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds and in case of emergency a 40 pound child
• All employees, regardless of position, serve as role models for children who are served by our center. Therefore, each employee must at all times be emotionally stable and able to function effectively with children, adolescents and adults who may have mental or behavioral health problems. The staff must be able to demonstrate appropriate daily behavior, appropriate expression of emotions, as well as appropriate role modeling. Hostility, aggression and unnecessary or inappropriate physical actions as well as inappropriate emotional expression are not acceptable.

Schedule:

• 8 hour shift
• Monday to Friday

COVID-19 considerations:
All staff and students are required to wear the appropriate PPE. We continue to implement frequent hand washing for staff and students. We have increased our cleaning measures. Lastly, we abide by all Covid-19 safety measures and protocols.

Education:

• High school or equivalent (Required)

Experience:

• Early childhood education: 2 years (Required)

License/Certification:

• CPR Certification (Preferred)
• Child Development Associate Certification (Preferred)
• Gateway Credentials (Preferred)
