The Position

The position of Tasting Room Assistant Manager for our Carmel Tasting Room works with the DTC and Hospitality Manager to orchestrate the public face of our winery- with the goal of creating the unforgettable and amazing experience that is central to our mission. Primary functions include collaborating on the hiring and management of the staff that serve our customers and designing and implementing creative selling strategies with the ultimate goal of enhancing our guests' experience; ensuring profitable sales while managing tasting room operations in an efficient, cost-effective manner. This position will be based at our Carmel Tasting Room, and will be expected to also work scheduled hours at our Hahn Estate location in Soledad, California.

We support the California grape and wine industry and are founding members of the Santa Lucia Highlands. Our reputation is made by the guest experience we offer in our tasting room and quality wines. We expect our tasting room staff to champion the California grape and wine industry in a positive and engaging manner.

Essential Duties &Responsibilities

Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned by manager.

· 40% Tasting Room Operations and Projects

· 15% Tasting Room Guest Service and Sales

· 25% Tasting Room Staff Management and Training

· 10%1nventory/Merchandising/Procurement

· 10% Other Duties as Required

Tasting Room Operations and Projects

· Ensure daily operational excellence

· Manage accurate wine and merchandise tracking and inventory

· Create, maintain and manage SOPs for transaction processes/Hardware (cash register, reporting, cash management)

· Work with DTC and Hospitality Manager to create and manage tasting room products, selling programs, incentive and events

· Manage and updates operational metrics

· Oversee all tasting room shipping & receiving in collaboration with Wine Club Manager

· Stock and attractively merchandise non-wine items for sale (such as wine accessories, shirts, etc.)

· Ensure accurate transactional pricing

· Manage tasting room Bookings Calendar

· Manage tasting room floor operations which include, but are not limited to maintaining housekeeping and safety standards, conducting opening and closing procedures, reconciling sales registers and cash and preparing deposits

· Assist with hospitality duties, such as VIP wine tours and tastings, winery events, and tasting programs

· Ability to safely operate and drive vehicle to transport wine from cold storage room to tasting room

· Projects vary, but include research for the DTC and Hospitality Manager, scheduling and outlining staff training events, working on Standard Operating Procedures, building Tasting Flights, proposing event ideas, etc.

· Performs timely updates and approvals to employee timekeeping records and PTO requests in ADP

· Participates in monitoring and reviewing the progress and accuracy of assigned work for tasting room staff

· Completes annual employee evaluations for tasting room staff in the 360 Review system

TASTING ROOM GUEST SERVICE ANDSALES

· Deliver the Hahn Estate Winery customer experience

· Ensure high level of customer service is provided

· Ensure Guest Beverage Service and Sales are conducted professionally and that great customer relationships are developed and maintained

· Enjoy food and wine and be able to discuss appropriate pairings

· Manage business systems at Hahn Carmel Tasting Room, as needed

· Watch for and seek out tasting room, wine, and customer feed-back, trends – and share withstaff

· Lead special events, off-site events/ tastings, or other functions as required

· Host wine tastings and tours

· Plan, execute, and achieve retail sales goals through tasting room activities and events open to Wine Club members and the public

· Generate and execute ideas to build tasting room traffic

· Communicates effectively with guests in a confident, knowledgeable and friendly manner that conveys our brand image and leads to sales transactions and brand loyalty

INVENTORY /MERCHANDISING/PROCURMENT

· Retail sales of wine and specialty merchandise in the tasting room and winery events, on the phone, via e-mail, and occasionally at off-site events

· Manages retail sales of wine and specialty merchandise in the tasting room, Wine Club program(s) and assist with winery events

· Maintains cleanliness of tasting room, retail displays, stock wine and retail inventory

· In conjunction with the DTC and Hospitality Manager, develop compelling visitor programs

Non-Essential Functions

· Assist with order entry, filing and other clerical duties, as needed

· Ability to safely operate and drive ATV to conduct tours at Estate

· Ability to perform duties as delegated by supervisor or designee

Competencies and Requirements

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

· Bachelor’s degree preferred, with an emphasis on business

· Minimum 2 years management experience, ideally wine retail related

· Proven sales ability with excellent customer service skills

· Strong presentation, project and time management skills with ability to multi-task

· Organized, positive self-starter with flexible attitude and an eye for details

· Ability to use sound judgement, critical thinking and problem-solving skills when presented with challenges, projects and duties as assigned

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills

· Proficient with computers, MS Office Suite and internet, working knowledge of social media

· Ability to learn our POS and reservation system

· An understanding of generally accepted accounting principles

· Ability to perform basic math skills to close out daily cash register transactions and calculate items such as discounts, commissions, percentages with accuracy

· Marketing, and specifically direct to marketing and outreach skills

· Ability to prioritize when handling multiple tasks

· Ability to speak confidently and accurately in front of groups of people

· Must be flexible and available to work variable schedule, including weekends & holidays

· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, maintain confidentiality and make sound decisions

· Ability to participate in group tastings, Wine Club events and guest experiences at the tasting room(s) and at times, travel and serve at off-site events

· Passion for wine and customer service with strong wine knowledge

· Must be at least 21 years of age

· Valid driver’s license with clean MVR (motor vehicle record) and ability to become and maintain Authorized Company Driver status

· Ability to safely operate and drive various company vehicles to assist with tours, events and move cases of wine from storage

· Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs., repetitively

· Follows safety and company protocols

· High school diploma or equivalent

· Prior retail customer service and/or Tasting Room experience, preferred

· Bilingual Spanish and/or other languages and working knowledge of POS systems (Vin65, Wine Direct), winemaking, food and wine paring, the wine industry and familiarity with local Monterey County area restaurants is a plus

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has supervisory responsibilities with 3-4 direct reports. Working with the DTC and Hospitality Manager, this role motivates, inspires, trains, provides instruction and develops tasting room staff. Leading

by example, provides a safe and collaborative work environment for team. Participates in the hiring, coaching, mentoring, evaluation and discipline process. Reviews employee timecards daily for accuracy, and updates as needed; approves biweekly at the end of each pay period by deadline, using the online ADP time keeping system. Performs timely review and approval process for all direct report PTO requests.

Ensures direct reports are taking required breaks and meal periods. Forwards and submits confidential employee documentation to payroll and Human Resources for processing. Creates and delivers annual performance assessments for all direct reports in the 360 Performance Review system.

Moderate physical activity performing regular somewhat strenuous activities including prolonged walking, standing, climbing, reaching, lifting, carrying and moving objects. Extended periods of desk/ computer/phone work. The employee is required to regularly stand and walk; use manual dexterity sufficient to reach, handle items, or feel, grip objects and talk. Hearing adequate for telephone, office and group conversation. The employee is frequently required to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time, grip and reach with hands and arms, and taste and smell food and/or wine. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, or crouch. Must be able and willing to interface with public and team members. Employee must complete daily wellness check-ins and temperature checks as required due to pandemic.

The employee must regularly lift and/or carry up to 40 pounds on a repetitive basis, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and stand for extended periods of time. Ability to kneel, bend and stoop to stock retail area by pushing/pulling and or moving and distributing cases of wine and other merchandise. Ability to walk on uneven pavement and vineyards to conduct guest and VIP tours as needed. Ability to safely operate and drive company vehicle to conduct tours as needed.

Position works in a well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor setting with adequate ventilation. Periods required working outdoors with changing conditions and exposure to heat and cold while conducting tours or moving between buildings at Estate. Periods of work in refrigerated, cold wine storage to perform inventory counts, stock and retrieve wine bottles, or wine cases from cold room. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Working Environment

Employee must be able to work in various weather conditions and non‐traditional business hours including evenings, and some weekends. The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; working near moving mechanical parts; extreme cold; extreme heat and vibration when working at Hahn Estate. Moderate noise levels typical of public space: music sound system, public conversations, telephones/cell phones, large groups.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $55,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
