Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Manager I will serve as the Assistant Site Manager and is responsible for planning and goal setting, organizing, and directing; budgeting, purchasing, training of staff and volunteers; administering policies, guidelines, standards, and procedures; conducting Performance Management, including coaching and discipline, and conducting visitor services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervises all visitor services and daily educational tasks such as guided tours. This position supervises the sites' private events coordinator and PIO, and two interpreters including the site historian. Also supervises the front desk and volunteers.
  • Conduct tours as part of visitor services, give general on-site and off-site presentations, and provide living history demonstrations.
  • Conduct appropriate artifact management and care techniques, and coordinate a docents program.
  • Research topics, perform clerical and financial duties, perform site purchasing via e-procurement, follow purchasing procedures, operate sales desk, greet visitors, and help with site maintenance.
Fort Fisher Historic Site is part of the NC Division of Historic Sites. The purpose of this Division is to preserve and share the economic, cultural, and political heritage of the state with citizens and visitors.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

To receive credit for your work history and credentials, you must provide the information on the application form. In order to qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following KSA's listed below:


  • Demonstrated knowledge of state or national antebellum and Civil War history.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing special events and educational programming.
  • Experience in planning, supervising, and/or directing the work of subordinate employees or volunteers.
  • Experience in maintaining records and preparing routine reports.
  • Must be able to work Tuesday - Saturday from 8:30 am – 5:00 pm with some work at night required during special events, etc.
Management preferences:
  • Demonstrated proficiency in state purchasing requirements, e-procurement.
  • Experience with living history programming.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in history or a field specifically related to the site of employment from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
