Job Summary

The Department of Communication at the University of Texas at Tyler is seeking candidates for an Assistant Professor of Mass Communication to start in Fall 2023. This tenure-track position will be for the department’s mass communication degree programs. The ideal candidate will have a professional background in public relations and experience in teaching public relations, integrated communication, or strategic communication courses at the college level, along with the ability to teach foundations courses when needed. Along with teaching, publication of research and service to the department and university will be requirements of the position.

Priority application deadline is Friday, April 21st, 2023, but review of applications will begin immediately, and the position will remain open until filled.


Essential Functions

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in mass communication.
  • Scholarly published research.
  • Hold regular office hours on campus.
  • Mentor students.
  • University and departmental service.


Required
Qualifications

  • ABD candidate with dissertation completed by May 2023.
  • Demonstrated promise of successful research ability.
  • Understanding of professional media production.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor students in media production and design.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Mass Communication or related field.
  • Strong demonstration of successful research ability.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
