The UWM Peck School of the Arts is one of the largest and most comprehensive arts schools in the region. Job Summary
The Department of Music seeks an experienced voice teacher and performer, appointed at the level of assistant or associate professor commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be a trained classical performer and pedagogue who also has experience teaching in non-classical styles (music theater, CCM, jazz, etc.) and embraces the aesthetic and educational value of both classical and non-classical singing.The successful candidate will provide leadership in all aspects of the voice area; teach lessons and studio classes to voice students in the MM, BFA, and BA programs; teach courses related to vocal performance and pedagogy; oversee vocal festivals for pre-college students; connect with area secondary choral programs and voice instructors to recruit students for UWM and provide support for regional vocal education; maintain an active schedule of research and/or creative activity; and participate in a full range of faculty governance and service activities within the University and Department of Music.

Specific tasks and duties:
1. Teach voice lessons and studio classes to students in the MM, BFA, and BA programs
2. Serve as voice area head – leading voice area faculty meetings, coordinating voice area activities, auditions, and TAs, and overseeing voice and opera faculty and load assignments
3. Teach the following courses as needed:
  • Vocal pedagogy
– Song literature
  • Lyric diction
  • Class voice
4. Connect with area secondary choral programs and voice instructors, actively recruit potential undergraduate and graduate voice majors, and coordinate voice area recruitment activities
5. Participate in Music Department faculty meetings, University and Music Department committees, and other areas of service to the department, school, and university
6. If interested and qualified, teach and direct opera workshop, though interest in teaching opera workshop is not required for this position

While there is a slight preference for a lower voice type (baritone, bass/baritone, or tenor), all voice types will be considered
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants for this position must have or provide evidence of the following:
  • A doctoral degree in vocal performance and/or pedagogy OR equivalent professional experience and a master’s degree in music
  • A minimum of five years of successful voice teaching with at least two years in a college or university setting
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting voice students
  • Evidence of training, performance, and/or teaching in both classical and non-classical vocal styles
Preferred Qualifications
Highly qualified applicants for this position will also provide evidence of the following:
  • A doctoral degree in vocal performance and/or pedagogy
  • At least seven years of successful voice teaching with four or more years in a collegiate setting and at least two years of full-time employment as a collegiate voice instructor
  • Demonstration of a clear and engaging teaching style that encourages technically sound, healthy, stylistically informed, and expressive singing
  • Evidence of expertise and significant teaching experience in both classical and non-classical vocal techniques and styles
  • Demonstration of high-quality, professional-level vocal performance skills
  • A documented record of successful recruitment of collegiate voice majors
  • A distinguished record of professional performances and/or research, presentations, and publications as well as a history of recognized awards or honors in the field of vocal performance
  • Active participation and leadership in relevant professional organizations
