- Ph.D. or equivalent in engineering, biology, biochemistry, biomedicine, or a closely related field.
Experience:
- Senior candidates should be established investigators with a strong record of funding, peer-reviewed publications, and technical leadership.

- Successful candidates will be expected to continue propelling the department forward in impact and visibility through research, translation, education, outreach, and service.

The state of Maryland also boasts one of the nation’s leading biotechnology and life sciences industry clusters and a vibrant entrepreneurial environment. The department has $18.8M in annual research expenditures and is known for its interdisciplinary scholarship and diverse faculty with 40% holding one or more Fellow awards in professional societies. It is closely affiliated with the Robert E. Fischell Institute of Biomedical Devices, which aims to catalyze the transformation of basic research into clinical practice and commercial success. Departmental faculty are also affiliated with other engineering departments at UMD as well as the Molecular and Cell Biology Program, the Brain and Behavior Institute, the Maryland Robotics Center, and the Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research.
In 2018, the department relocated to a new home in A. James Clark Hall, a 184,000 sq. ft. facility that features state-of-the-art laboratories and new departmental core facilities. The building also offers a cutting-edge vivarium and translational imaging suite, GMP production and prototyping labs, flexible classrooms, and collaborative student project space.

- Research statements should be 5 pages maximum describing past accomplishments and including future plans and how these will be enabled or enhanced by joining the Fischell Department of Bioengineering. Teaching statements should be 3 pages maximum describing any prior experience and delineating teaching philosophy and interests compatible with the educational mission of the Fischell Department of Bioengineering. Discussion of specific efforts to support underrepresented groups in STEM within the research and teaching statements is encouraged.
