Assistant Director, Women's Resource Center

APPLY

Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.

Student and Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual, academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellness, social justice, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.

The Office of the Dean of Students (DOS) cultivates the holistic growth and development of students through advocacy, empowerment, and education. We enhance the student experience by offering comprehensive support and resources, providing co-curricular opportunities, and fostering a sense of belonging.

The Diversity & Inclusion (D & I) portfolio supports the holistic development of the student experience by creating engagement opportunities, support services, and initiatives focused on belonging, equity, and inclusion. The D & I portfolio is comprised of identity-based centers and offices that support and empower students from historically marginalized backgrounds while also providing all Cornell community members with opportunities to deepen their understanding of racial justice and equity, expand their allyship skills, engage in dialogue across differences, and be a part of the movement for positive social change.

The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) is a unit within the Office of the Dean of Students, within the Division of Student and Campus Life. At the Women’s Resource Center, we believe in – and strive for - women’s education, empowerment, and strength. We aim to foster a vibrant and supportive campus community for woman-identified and nonbinary students so that they can bring their full and authentic selves to every part of their lives, and fully believe that it is best to champion women from an inclusive and intersectional place that acknowledges and supports all of their identities. Through leadership development opportunities, dynamic programs, and engaging events, we seek to build community and promote gender equity and inclusion at Cornell and beyond. This position supervises all Resource Center student staff, advises several student organizations, assists students in the coordination and implementation of student run large-scale community programs, and supports educational and intersectional longitudinal co-curricular programs. This position is vital to our efforts within Student and Campus Life to support student engagement, empowerment, and belonging. This person will serve as a confidential resource.

If you are a team oriented, student-centered, highly collaborative professional looking to empower and positively impact college students from historically excluded and/or minoritized student populations, we would love to have you join our team. We need an intentional, caring, innovative, equity-minded, and passionate professional to help students achieve their personal, professional, and academic goals.

This position is located in Ithaca, New York and is fully on-site. There will likely be flexibility for remote work during off-peak periods, dependent on business need.
This position should anticipate supporting student groups during non-traditional business hours including evenings and weekends. Please submit both a resume and cover letter in your application to be considered for this position.

Success Factors

  • Commitment to cultivating an inclusive space where women-identified and nonbinary students can feel welcomed and able to engage and learn from others who have had life experiences and hold social identities that are similar and different from their own, as well as understanding the needs of students from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds at the intersection of multiple identities.
  • Strong program planning and event management skills to implement, assess, and support various programs, including large-scale events and workshops for students from diverse backgrounds. Adaptable to new priorities and agile in managing multiple relationships and projects.
  • Capable of fostering student leadership development through advising, training, guidance, and reflection opportunities for various student organizational leaders and student staff to achieve their goals and missions and meet their job expectations. Maintains a supportive and student-centered environment that empowers and equips students with skills and strategies to engage in self-advocacy, coalition building, and governance.
  • An ability to work as part of a dynamic and flexible team in a fast-paced professional office and to interact collaboratively with diverse audiences to effectively effect change from within systems, build relationships, maintain trust, and identify and advocate for achievable solutions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 - 4 years of experience, or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Understanding of gender justice issues, trends, and needs, especially pertaining to college students
  • Multicultural competency and experience advising diverse groups of students
  • Strong oral, written, and presentation skills: ability to convey complex concepts and to communicate with students, faculty, staff, and community members in a manner that promotes dialogue and understanding
  • Ability to advise and supervise students, showing good judgment about when to make referrals, set boundaries, and equip students with skills and strategies to engage in self-advocacy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred in College Student Development, Student Affairs Administration, Higher Education, Diversity Education, Social Justice Education, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Social Work, or a related field
  • Experience advising or working closely with students from diverse and/or historically marginalized populations
  • 2-3 years of experience working with minoritized college student populations in a higher education setting
