The Assistant Chief Medical Examiner position is based in Norfolk, Virginia. The Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is a statewide medical examiner system with four regional district offices encompassing 19 forensic pathologists and a Chief Medical Examiner. The OCME-Eastern District covers the eastern region of Virginia and is seeking a forensic pathologist to join the staff of three current board certified forensic pathologists. Responsibilities include death investigations, postmortem examinations, approximately 250 medicolegal autopsies per year, consultations with interested parties, court testimony, supervision of staff, and other administrative oversight duties. The position advises/supervises local medical examiners as part of a 76 year old statewide medical examiner system created in 1946. Educational responsibilities include the instruction of forensic pathology fellows, medical students, public safety officers and others. The pathologist will participate in educational, training and research activities and participate in committees. Current staffing includes a complement of medicolegal death investigators, forensic autopsy technicians and administrative support as well as onsite surveillance unit members. Occasional overnight travel. Base salary commensurate with experience. Includes a full benefits package.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience performing forensic autopsies and postmortem examinations.
Applicants must have or be able to obtain medical licensure in Virginia.
Board certification or eligibility in anatomic and forensic pathology
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
Required to maintain a valid driver’s license and adhere to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Driver Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with medicolegal death investigations.
Experience with testifying in court.
Advanced training in cardiovascular pathology, neuropathology, pediatric pathology, law or public health desirable.
University appointment is anticipated with rank determined by qualifications.
