Job description
Argonne National Laboratory has a long-standing tradition of attracting top early career talent through the Named Fellowship Program. These special fellowships are awarded internationally each year to outstanding doctoral engineers and scientists who are at early points in promising careers. The AETS Named Fellowship is an exciting and unique opportunity to lead and contribute to cutting edge applied research that develops and uses artificial intelligence components for science and engineering applications in the energy and global security space. The proposals should demonstrate short and long-term impact on the target applications. Fellows work closely with an Argonne sponsor to pursue their research interests.
AETS Named Fellowship Details:
  • Proposals that align with Argonne and DOE missions with be considered, including proposals in the areas of:
    • Manufacturing science and engineering
    • Nuclear energy science and technology
    • Advanced propulsion and power
    • Transportation and mobility
    • Energy and critical resource recovery
    • Non-proliferation and cybersecurity
    • Security and resilience of infrastructure systems
  • Candidates should familiarize themselves with the
    Report on the DOE Town Halls on AI for Science
    and consult with their sponsors to determine the strategic alignment with the proposed application.
  • Proposals that make use of
    Argonne’s user facilities
    and
    Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) AI-Testbed
    are strongly encouraged.
  • The following funding model allows Fellows to advance independent research as outlined in their fellowship proposal, while making significant contributions to Argonne’s initiatives.
    • The first two years of the fellowship are funded 100% by the AET and NTNS directorates.
    • The third year is funded 50% by the directorates and 50% by other programs identified by the fellow and the host division.

Position Requirements
  • Ph.D. conferred within three years at the time of application or completion of Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.
  • Experience in using leadership-class CPU and hybrid CPU/GPU supercomputers for large-scale computationally intensive simulations and data analysis.
  • Experience in developing data intensive machine learning frameworks (using TensorFlow, PyTorch, Flux, etc.) on advanced architectures to advance science, engineering, and technological developments.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills to contribute to creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Skilled in communication skills, both verbal and written at all levels of the organization.
  • Collaborative skills, including the ability to work well with other labs, universities, computing centers, and industry.
  • Evidence of academic achievement with potential for technical and research leadership.
  • Research in areas that align with Argonne’s mission.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
