TxDOT's Waco District is looking for an Area Engineer based in our Belton Area Office in Belton, TX. As the Area Engineer you will have oversight in the planning, design and construction of multiple projects and oversight of roadway maintenance throughout Bell County. The challenges are sizeable, but the results are rewarding for the right person. The average day will consist of interacting with Waco District leadership, the general public, and managing the activities of TxDOT. This is a leadership position with unlimited opportunities!

Position Description


Work involves keeping abreast of current transportation design innovations, modifications, laws, regulations, policies and procedures; overseeing: construction operations in the area office to include review of shop drawings, compliance with regulations, approval of letting advertising and conducting pre-construction meetings and public hearings, Design Section operations in the area office; overseeing inspection of construction projects and temporary traffic control, operations of the maintenance sections to include planning and budgeting work with maintenance supervisors and district staff, right-of-way plan preparation and monitors acquisition processes to coordinate project letting, utility relocation/adjustment inspection and responsible for material testing and construction engineering.

Essential Duties:

  • Approves and inspects driveway, utility and drainage permits, and monitors removal of illegal signs.
  • Coordinates work and agreements with municipal and county governments
  • Directs administrative and business operation activities including human resources, training programs, inventory oversight, safety and preparation and monitoring of budgets.
  • Monitors signing, pavement marking and striping to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Oversees, coordinates and monitors contractors' compliance with plans and specifications; authorizes payment of estimates; resolves differences, disputes and claims; plans preparation and approval of expenditures.
  • Oversees, plan and executes emergency procedures, preparedness and response for a geographic area; as required responds to office/incident location to direct/oversee activities for emergency situations/conditions.
  • Provides direction for construction projects and/or contract change negotiations.
  • Represents the Department to the public; answers inquiries from governmental officials, makes media presentations, speaks at public functions and participates in other civic endeavors.
  • Reviews, recommends and approves change orders.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience:

  • 5 years transportation engineering. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have 1 year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Safety Impact Certificate
  • Licensed Prof Engineer*
  • Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
