A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is recruiting Area Coordinators to manage Marine Biologist/Fishery Observers in support of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Pacific Islands Fishery Observation Program (PIROP).

Primary Function:

The primary duties of Area Coordinators are to support the Marine Biologists/Fishery Observers, engage with the commercial fishing industry, work with NMFS, and perform project management and administrative duties to ensure the contract goals and objectives are met. The primary goals of PIROP are to provide quantitative biological, vessel, and gear-selectivity information for the various Pacific Island fisheries. Marine Biologist/Fishery Observers operate on commercial fishing vessels operating in ports throughout Hawaii and American Samoa.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Monitoring vessel activity daily by visually tracking each vessel’s arrival and departure from port and submitting report to the Project Manager
  • Utilizing field book to document communication with the industry
  • Participating in the observer selection process by reviewing applicants and making recommendations
  • Communicating vessel assignment to observers
  • Conducting placement meetings and troubleshooting issues that might arise such as helping captains find replacements for expired hydrostatic releases, expired or insufficient flares, etc.
  • Scheduling and completing gear check-out appointments
  • Maintaining trip log and tracking observer deployment and sea day accomplishments
  • Picking-up observers when they land from vessels, receive gear, bring observers to lodging, facilitate the return of items that have been frozen following a trip
  • Approving observer timesheets and submitting them to the PM
  • Completing observer evaluations to provide feedback on their performance
  • Completing administrative functions at the office such as filing, mailing items, updating observer certifications in employee database and contact lists
  • Notifying NMFS when observers land to commence the debriefing process
  • Conferencing with observers during and after each debriefing
  • Meeting regularly with observers and organizing social events for observers to attend
  • Assisting in the logistics for the observer trainings

Compensation: Port Coordinators will be paid an annual salary to be negotiated and total compensation will vary depending on employee’s availability and fishing effort. This is a full–time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the biological sciences
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must not be affiliated with any group that may impair the objectivity or the appearance of objectivity in collecting commercial fisheries data and have no direct financial interest in a fishery managed under a Fisheries Management Plan
  • Must be proficient with MS Office software
  • Must have proven organizational and time management skills with the ability to remain poised under pressure
  • Must have effective communication, listening and inter-personal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 or more years of observer experience with the Pacific Islands Regional Office or 2 or more years of observer experience in another region

Travel:

  • 50% of the time traveling between fishing piers, the office, and the NOAA facility.
  • Less than 5% of the time traveling outside of Honolulu
