This full-time, project Laboratory Technician 1 position is currently funded through July 31, 2024.

This is a Laboratory Technician 1 position in the Antibiotic Resistance Lab Network (ARLN)/ Reference lab; incumbent is required to work on-site in the Shoreline, WA lab due to the nature of the work/duties.
  • It is an expectation that all staff may be called upon to respond during public health emergencies. This position will help to contribute to the successful of the West Regional Lab/ Reference Lab.
  • Accessioning, conducting inventories, preparing, and recycling the resources needed by the scientists for their work.
  • Performing basic tasks in the preparation and analysis of samples in the laboratories and helping with reporting and filing of the results of the analyses.

Duties include
  • Logging in specimens, creating work card, and entering results.
  • Receiving media/supplies.
  • Performing media QC, biological indicator testing to assure autoclaves are functioning properly and the sterilization of media and laboratory waste is assured, laboratory chemical inventory and assure proper labeling of all reagents and chemicals, PM for equipment, and specified quality assurance tests.
  • Preparing specimens for shipping and delivering incoming specimens to appropriate laboratory for processing.
  • Cleaning, maintaining, and disinfecting laboratory areas and equipment.
  • Using SOPs to prepare kits, solutions, media, and mixtures.
  • Monitoring laboratory equipment for proper operations including tracking temperatures.
  • Maintaining laboratory files, both paper and electronic.

Required Qualifications
  • Option 1: Six (6) or more months of work experience performing microbiological, chemical, clinical, or public health testing or surveillance.

OR

  • Option 2
    : One (1) or more quarters/semesters of coursework and laboratory work performing microbiological, chemical, clinical, or public health testing or surveillance.


AND

Demonstrated experience using the following:

  • MS Excel to create, modify, print, and format spreadsheets, find and replace data, and work with basic formulas and functions; use templates, styles, AutoFormats, and multiple worksheets.
  • MS Word to create, format, edit, review, print, and save documents; use standard functions to select, edit, copy, paste, format, and spell check text; create bulleted and numbered lists, indent and align paragraphs, and use bordering and shading features.
  • MS Outlook to compose, send, and respond to e-mail and to coordinate schedules and schedule meetings.

Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree or higher in laboratory science, biology, microbiology, chemistry, other health-related discipline, or a closely allied field.
  • One (1) or more years of laboratory work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience receiving and tracking samples and/or materials into inventory.
  • Demonstrated experience working with blood-borne pathogens, chemical hygiene, and general laboratory safety.
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining electronic and hard copy files.

Required Competencies:
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of fundamental principles of chemistry or microbiology and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
  • Competent operating basic laboratory equipment.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to effectively use desktop computer applications (Word processors, Spreadsheets, database applications).
  • Ability to competently use laboratory instruments and related control and data analysis software.
  • Ability to balance quality of work with meeting deadlines for both routine work and special projects.

Conditions of Employment/Working Conditions

  • Work in the Washington Public Laboratory animal facility which includes cage washing equipment, mouse housing equipment, animal waste containment equipment, and euthanasia equipment. Work with mice or other laboratory animals.
  • Work effectively at a shared desk and computer space when required to perform office work.
  • Occasionally pick up and deliver items using a state vehicle.
  • Work with hazardous chemicals such as acids, bases, radioactive materials, and organic substances; microorganisms.
  • Receive vaccinations due to potential exposure to certain microorganisms/agents within the laboratory.
  • Undergo a medical evaluation for use of respirator and, with training, wear a respirator.
  • Handle pressurized and liquefied gas, with proper training.
  • Occasionally work in the field in potentially hazardous conditions.
  • Work in a standing position for extended periods.
  • Perform colorimetric testing.
  • Participate in in emergency testing implemented due to a public health situation.
