SUMMARY: Under close supervision, enforces codes and ordinances for the maintenance, care, and control of animals within the City of Roswell.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Patrols an assigned area scanning for loose animals; checks yards for animal chained or tied inhumanly, proper shelter set up, and overall health of outdoor animals; issues citations when necessary.
• Responds to dispatch calls requesting removal of sick, injured, aggressive, stray, or abandoned animals.
• Investigates complaints; completes reports and paperwork including but not limited to impoundment forms, animal attack reports, complaints; issues citations as necessary.
• Assists at the City Animal Shelter; cleans kennels; feeds animals; responds to inquiries from pet owners in regards to impounded animals.
• Supports the relationship between the City of Roswell and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent, Associate’s Degree preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge of:

• City and Department policies and procedures.
• Basic animal care and handling.
• Local codes and ordinances and State laws governing animal care and control.
• Weapons use and safety.

Skill in:

• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
• Effective verbal and written communication.
• Handling animals safely and humanely.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

A New Mexico State Driver’s License is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Majority of work is performed outdoors, with some work to be performed at the City Animal Shelter. Requires contact with dangerous animals and use of proper safety equipment.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

This classification requires that a “Pre-Employment Release and Waiver Form” be completed and submitted along with the employment application. Candidates must pass a post-offer, pre-employment limited physical given by a City-designated physician and pass a post-offer pre-employment drug screen administered by a City-designated facility.

CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:

Incumbents and candidates must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and insurability in accordance with the City’s insurance carrier.
