The Animal Care and Enrichment (ACE) Associate has the opportunity to work directly with the animals entrusted to Michigan Humane, ensuring they are on the path to finding a forever loving home. The ACE Associate is responsible for the daily care and well-being of all animals in the adoption center. The ideal candidate will exhibit empathy and compassion towards animals and be comfortable with the daily responsibilities of animal care in a shelter environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Humanely treat and care for all animals entrusted to Michigan Humane.
  • Feed, water, walk, socialize and bathe animals according to schedules and established protocol.
  • Clean and disinfect food dishes, litter pans, kennels, cages and yard areas daily.
  • Responsible for laundry and dish-washing duties.
  • Maintain cleanliness in both people and animal areas.
  • Restock assigned areas with essential supplies at the end of each shift.
  • Promote Michigan Humane Society programs and general goodwill among clients and staff.
  • Attend special fundraising and adoption events as needed.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Assist the veterinarian and veterinary techs with restraint and treatment of animals.
  • Assist with the administration of vaccines, subcutaneous fluids and injections under veterinary supervision (excluding rabies).
  • Administer medications under supervision.
  • Assist with accurately filling, labeling and documenting prescriptions.
  • Obtain and prepare lab specimens such as blood, feces and urine.
  • Perform routine lab duties such as heartworm tests, feline leukemia tests, ear swabs, blood chemistries, fecal floatation and skin scrapings.
  • Assist with taking radiographs.
  • Assist with cleaning surgical instruments and sterilizing packs. Stock supplies in exam, surgical and treatment areas of the clinic.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate and complete medical records. Enter all services, treatments, medications, surgeries and other information on the medical record.
  • Answer phones and perform receptionist duties, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma (or equivalent)
  • 1-3 of related experience
  • Previous animal experience a plus
  • Must be flexible and able to handle changes in a fast-paced work environment
