JOB SUMMARY

The Allowable Alternative Vehicle (AAV) Driver/Maintenance position is under the direction of the Transportation/Maintenance Coordinator. The incumbent serves as a driver for the Head Start program and is responsible for safe operation of the vehicle according to all driving laws. The main goal is the safe transportation and wellbeing of all passengers. Proper vehicle maintenance and upkeep are important for safety and are the responsibilities of this position. Additional maintenance duties involve the general maintenance and upkeep of playground equipment and grounds.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

· Safe operation and upkeep of assigned AAV vehicle

· Communicates positively and effectively with all children and adults

· Leadership in guiding passengers to obey the safety rules while riding the bus; works with the bus monitor to ensure a safe atmosphere

· Transports children, and parents to and from Head Start, field trips and other program activities

· Assists with the equipment and special needs of children with disabilities

· Assists the teaching staff with child supervision while on field trips; including the occasional distribution of snacks and drinks

· Submits monthly reports to Transportation/Maintenance Coordinator

· Operates and maintains AAV vehicles and other program vehicles as assigned

· Maintains vehicle roster, logs and records

· Checks board and sign out lists for schedule changes

· Promptly reports all malfunctions, damage and concerns of vehicles to immediate supervisor

· Follow all transportation laws, policies, and guidelines

· Performs job in compliance with Head Start regulation and Federal and Tribal mandates

· Grounds maintenance duties such as; mowing, watering, and weeding lawns; trimming trees, and any other such tasks necessary for a safe and healthy environment for children, parents, staff and visitors

· Janitorial services for classrooms, offices, restrooms and other program facilities

· Helps set up facilities for Head Start activities such as ceremonies, assemblies and meetings

· Minor repairs of the Head Start facility that may include plumbing and electrical work as knowledge, skills and abilities allow

· Minor repairs of Head Start playground equipment

· Maintenance and repair of toys and classroom furnishings

· Janitorial duties

· Attends staff meetings and required trainings

· Deliver and pick up mail at the Tribal Administration Office

· Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

· Knowledge of Federal Head Start transportation regulations

· Ability to maintain a cooperative, friendly, and responsible attitude

· Ability to redirect children in a positive and safe manner

· Ability to maintain strict confidentiality

· Knowledge of and ability to appreciate people from minority cultures and low-income families

· Ability to work effectively as a team member

· Ability to communicate positively with all persons at Head Start

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· Arizona Driver’s License

· High School Diploma or GED

· Obtain Hepatitis A & B within 90 days of employment

· COVID-19 immunizations before the start of employment

· Valid First Aid/CPR card or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment and keep current

· Successful criminal background check as required by Tribal, federal and local law and Head Start standards OR possess a level one fingerprint clearance card

· Valid CRIT Food Handler’s Card or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment and keep current

· Annual physical exam according to established standards

· TB skin test

PREFERRED QUILIFICATIONS:

· Experience in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, janitorial, grounds maintenance

· Five-years work experience as a driver
